Whitney Alberts

Whitney Carl Alberts was born 28 Aug 1889, son of Richard Alberts and Mary. In 1900 Whitney is age 10, living in Freesoil, Mason county with his parents and siblings.

On the Durant roll Whitney is age 19. Unfortunately the scan of the field notes 37-52 has cut off his name at the bottom of the page.

In 1910 Whitney is 21, still living in Freesoil, working at a common laborer.

On 15 May 1916 in Rapid City, Kalkaska county Whitney, age 26, born Hart, married Sarah Marsh, age 18, born Fountain, daughter of Joe Marsh and Alice Russett.

Ludington Daily News 16 May 1917 under Mason county news, Darr School (Freesoil Township):

On 5 Jun 1917 Whitney registered for the draft in Mason county. He claims his wife and parents as dependents.

Son Francis is born 15 Dec 1917 in Mason county. Daughter Hazel is born 26 Nov 1919.

The 1920 census Freesoil, Mason county shows Whitney, 30 as head of family with wife Sarah, 21, mother Mary, 64, widowed, brother George, 32, nieces Egellia, 7 and Irene, 6, son Prince, 2 and daughter Hazel, one month. No occupation is given for the men.

Son Francis (Prince in the above census) dies 6 Feb 1921 in Clearwater, Kalkaska county.

Daughter Susan is born in 1921.

Wife Sarah dies on13 Jun 1923 age the age of 23.

Whitney, 35 married Beatrice Nahgahgwon, 18, daughter of Dan Nahgahgwon and Martha Squanda on 15 Sep 1924 in Dearborn, Wayne county.

By 1930 Whitney, 39 and wife Beatrice E., 23, have four children: Frank 3 11/12, William, 2 11/12, Francis, 1 10/12, Wilmer, 0/12. The family is living in Oscoda, Iosco county and is mixed blood Ottawa. Whitney is working as a carpenter.

Son Arthur Stanley is born 18 May 1931 in Oscoda and dies 9 Oct 1931, also in Oscoda.

John Roland is born 28 Jul 1932 in Oscoda.

The Ludington Daily News of 20 Sep 1933 tells of Whitney winning $50 in a log birling contest. Log birling is a game of skill, especially among lumberjacks, in which two competitors try to balance on a floating log while spinning it with their feet. [thefreedictionary.com]

Julius Harby is born 14 Jul 1933 in Oscoda and dies 23 Mar 1934.

Whitney is front page news in 1934. He is pictured in the State Times Advocate (Baton Rouge, Louisianna) 25 Aug issue.

Another child passes in 1934. Rose Billie Marina is born 2 Oct 1934 and dies 21 Dec 1934.

The Escanaba Daily Press of 29 Jan 1942 tells of Whitney appearing at sport show.

Whitney registers for the draft in World War II on 27 Apr 1942.

On 15 Mar 1944 in Oscoda Susan Alberts Wesley, 23, born Mancelona, married John A. Nahgahgwon, 33, born in Iosco county, son of Daniel Nahgahgwon and Martha Squanda. John is the brother of Susan's stepmother Beatrice. Wesley is the surname of Susan's maternal grandmother Alice Russett Marsh's second husband Frank Wesley.


The Traverse City Record Eagle of 24 Jun 1950 tells of Hazel's visit to Susan and John.

Ludington Daily News of 10 Aug 1955 tells of death of Francis.

Whitney Carl Alberts died 31 Jan 1977 in Harrisville, Alcona county.

Hazel (Alberts) Wesley died 23 Mar 1985 in Tawas City, Iosco county.

Beatrice Edith Alberts died 5 Jul 2001 in Mount Pleasant, Isabella county.

Frank Alberts died 9 Jan 2013 in Mt. Pleasant, Isabella county.

FRANK ALBERTS of Oscoda passed away January 9, 2013 at Adnahwod Continuing Care in Mt. Pleasant at 86 years of age.

He was born May 5, 1926 to Whitney and Beatrice (nee Nahgahgwon) Alberts. He is survived by one brother, John Alberts. Preceded in death by his wife, Ann. Siblings, Hazel Wesley, Susan Nahgahgwon, William D. Alberts, Wilmer C. Alberts and Francis Alberts.

Frank enjoyed woodcarving and attended state wide Pow Wow’s. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a member of the Oscoda Indian Mission Church and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Oscoda Indian Mission Church, 7994 Alvin Road, Oscoda, Michigan. The family will receive friends Friday from 3-9 P.M. at the Oscoda Chapel of the BURESH FUNERAL HOME, 212 W. River Road in Oscoda. Interment at the Indian Mission Cemetery., Rev. George Alberts

George Alberts was said to have been born 11 Apr 1887, son of Richard Alberts and Mary. He is not on the 1900 Federal Census with his parents.

The durant field notes 37/52 say he is 21, unmarried and living in Freesoil, Mason county.

In 1910 George is 23, living in Freesoil with his parents.

George's son Spencer was born 11 Jan 1916 and died 11 Mar 1916 in Elbridge, Oceana county. Mother is listed as Madeline Bailey.

Son Claude, born 8 Mar 1917, dies one year later on 24 Mar 1918 also in Elbridge, Oceana county. Again mother is listed as Madeline Bailey.

George, age 32, married Madeline Bailey, 25, daughter of Frank Bailey, on 29 Jun 1918 in Elbridge.

Sadly Madeline died 21 Oct 1918 in Elbridge at the age of 25.

On the 1920 census of Freesoil, Mason county, George, 32 is living with his brother Whitney's family. Egellia, 7 and Irene, 6 are listed as Whitney's nieces. Are these George's daughters?

 On 29 Jun 1925 in Manistee his daughter, Stellar, dies. She was born 15 Nov 1912.

George, age 42 and widowed is listed in the 1930 census in Meade township, Mason. Living with him is nephew Charles Skimhorn, 25. Both men are listed as full Ottawa, laborers in lumber woods.

The 1940 census for George has not yet been found.

George died 19 Mar 1971 in Hart, Oceana, Michigan.

Elizabeth Alberts Thomas

Elizabeth Alberts was born in Feb 1885, the daughter of Richard Alberts and Mary. In 1900 she is with her parents, age 15, working as a servant.
 

The Michigan Marriages database 1822-1995 at FamilySearch.org has John Peters, 23, b. Hamlin, son of Jim Peters, married Eliza, 21, b. Grand Haven, daughter of Albert Richards on 18 May 1903 in Grant, Mason county. It probably should be daughter of Richard Alberts.

The durant field notes 37/52 show Eliza, age 23, living in Freesoil, Mason county, with husband John Peters (field notes 7/59), age 27. They have three children, Fred, age 4, James/Jean (male), age 2 and Frank born 14 Jun 1908.

No 1910 has been located. On 12 Sep 1918 John registers for the draft. He is living in Filer City, Manistee county.

In 1920 the John, 38 and Eliza, 35 are living in Filer township, Manistee county with children Fred, 15, Frank, 11, Willis, 8 and Chester 1 year 8 months. John and Fred work as laborers at a fiber mill.

Son Fred married Ella Miximong on 24 Aug 1926 in Cheboygan, Cheboygan county.

Ernest dies 21 Jul 1928 in Muskegon. His death states he was born 30 Jan 1920 in Manistee, days after the 1920 census.

Living in Muskegon in 1930 are John, 49, married at 23, Eliza E., 45, married at 18, Frank, 22, William, 19, Chester, 12, Celia, 7, Richard, 5 and Mary, 1. John, Frank and William work as laborers at the paper mill.

Also in 1930, Fred, 26, Ella, 21, and children Fred Jr., 2 years 2 months and Laurine, 4 months are living in Petoskey, Emmet county, next to her parents, John and Agnes Miximong.

Son James23, wife Jennie C., 21 and brother Richard, 5, are living in Muskegon, Muskegon county in 1930. James is an oven tender at a foundry.

Tragedy strikes 18 Jan 1933. Eliza's son Frank and nephew Charles Skimhorn (son of sister Mary) drown in Pentwater Lake.

According to his death certificate, Frank was born on 24 Jun 1909 in Freesoil. (Durant field notes have him born 14 Jun 1908 which is more likely since he wouldn't be on the durant roll if born in 1909).  Died 18 Jan 1933.

The 1940 census has John, 59, Eliza, 55, Chester, 23, Richard, 15 and Mary, 11 living in Manistee county. Chester is a laborer at a foundry, while there is no occupation given for John. 

Son James, 33, wife Jennie 32, and his brother Chester, 22 are living in Meade township, Mason county. James and Chester are laborers doing forest work.

Son William, 28, a painter, is living in Petoskey, Emmet county with wife Rose, 25, daughters Rosemary, 7 and Lillian, 4, mother-in-law Agnes Miximong, 69, widowed and nephew Ailbers Peters, 5.

Maple Grove cemetery in Freesoil, Mason county has the following tombstones.

Buried in Woodmere cemetery in Detroit are Rose Peters, born 9 Feb 1916, died 27 Nov 1968 and husband William born 2 Jul 1911, died 10 Apr 1979. Website did not give source of obituaries.
