Indians of Yuba Area

This copy of a handwritten article can be found in the Local History files of the Traverse Area District Library. It is written by Bernice Pulcipher Dean (1895-1974) after her 1948 marriage and describes Native people she knew in the early 1900s.

Names mentioned are Old Pete Shenomquet, his sister Old Angeline, Angeline's daughter (Young Angeline), Jim Skippergosh (husband of Young Angeline), Blind Maggie, Whiskey Mary, Jim Bemis, Jim's son Amos Bemis, Ben Peshaba and Albert Southbird.

Isaac Shaw waw nah she

Shaw waw nah she was probably born in the 1790s. He was the father of three know children, Nashkaze (Moses Allen), Ah-wan-e-gezhick/Wanegeshik, and Makooqua (Theresa Kagn).

He is found in the following records.

1839 annuity roll under Chief Addison Ah kay o say:
#2 Shaw wan a shee, 1 male, 1 female, 1 child, received $26.52

The 1855 annuity roll under Chief Addison Ah kay o say:
#19 Shem waw nene she, 1 male, 1 female, no children, received $16.64

Land allotment under the 1855 treaty
Isaac Shaw wan naw she - W1/2 of SW 1/4 section 29 T31N R11W 80 acres.

The 1858 annuity roll under Chief Aw ko we say:
#28 Shaw waw naw she, 1 male, 1 female, no children, received $8.42

1860 Federal Census - Leelanau, Leelanau, Michigan

Sha wa nosh shy, age 68, farmer, real estate valued at $150, personal estate valued at $25

The 1861 annuity roll under Chief Aw ko we say:
#19 Shaw waw naw she, 1 male, 1 female, no children, received $9.24

The 1865 annuity roll under Chief Aw ko we say:
#17 Shaw waw naw she, 1 male, 1 female, no children, received $8.00



The 1866 annuity roll under Chief Aw ko we say:
#18 Shaw waw naw she, 1 male, 1 female, no children, received $7.98




Between the 1866 and 1867 rolls his wife died.

The 1867 annuity roll under Chief Aw ko we say:
#28 Shaw waw naw she, 1 male, no female, no children, received $3.57



The 1868 annuity roll under Chief Aw ko we say:
#28 Shaw waw naw she 1 male no female no children received $15.85



Shaw waw nah she has not been found on either the 1870 Federal census or the 1870 annuity roll (and therefore not mentioned on the Durant roll.) It is likely he has passed in 1868 or 1869.

On the 26 Jun 1872 Isaac Shaw waw nah she and his heirs received the patent for the W 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of section 29, T31N, R11W, Leelanau township, Leelanau county, Michigan.

While having passed prior to 1870, in 1897, because he owned land which someone wants to purchase, Shaw waw naw she's estate was probated.

The probate calendar for Isaac Shaw waw nah she found at the Leelanau County Michigan Courthouse directs to file 263.








This page is dated 5 Aug 1897. "Moses Allen otherwise known as Nashkaze, a son of the deceased entitled to inherit an undivided one third interest and Wanegeshik, a son, an undivided one third interest and Ma-koo-qua otherwise known as Theresa Kagn, a daughter, an undivided one third interest."

Also named are:

Nancy Allen, George Allen and Susan Allen children of Moses.

Sarah Wanegeshik, wife of Wanegeshik; James Wanegeshik, James Wahsageshik and Peter Wanegeshik, children o f Wanegeshik [yes two are called James].

Samson Nada, Eli Nada, Anna Nada and William Nada, children of George Nada, a son of Wanegeshik.

Joseph Tabasash and Philip Naquam, sons of Makooqua

Stella Anderson, daugther of Ka-pa-o-sa-quay, a daughter of Makooqua
