Isaac Southbird

The first record found for Isaac South is the 1870 annuity roll. #44 on page 43 is Shaw-we-ne-pe-nay-se, 1 man, 1 woman, receiving $30.60; living in Nay-waw-day-ke-zhick's band. Isaac is not shown in the 1868 annuity roll, which could mean he is still in his father's household at the time.

From the 1870 Federal Census of Bingham township, Leelanau, Michigan is learned that Isaac Shawambinisi is 20 and a farmer, with real estate valued at $540 and personal estate valued at $130. Also in the family are Mary, 15, keeping house, Sophia, 50, living with daughter; Nadwesaginam, 65, female, living with daughter; Benedict, 15; Margaret, 8; and Angeline, 6; all are surnamed Shawambinisi. Unfortunately this census does not give relationships.


The 1880 Federal Census for Bingham township, Leelanau, Michigan gives the following family, all surnamed Shawnibnasa except last person. Isaac, age 30, farmer; Mary, wife, 26, keeping house; John, son, 8; Moses, son, 5; Michael, son, 2; Frederick, nephew, 22, laborer; Catharine, niece, 18, laborer; Mary, mother, 70; Mary Nawdwasgenum, aunt, 88.

John Shawabenasy, died 7 Sep 1888, son of Isaac and Mary, ledger page 154 record 1304 (This is a second son named John, the first is still living)

Sharlotte Shawnanbenacy, died 28 Sep 1889, daughter of Isaac, ledger page 133 record 1418

Moses Southbird died 2 May 1899 in Acme, Grand Traverse county of consumption (tb). He was 23 and buried in Peshawbestown. Informant was Peter Chippewa.



1900 Federal Census of Acme, Grand Traverse, Michigan has the family as follows: Southbird, Isac, b. Dec 1843, 56, married 30 years, day laborer, own free house; Mary, wife, b. Oct 1853, 46, married 30 years, 12 children born, 7 children living, keeping house; John, son, b. Jan 1874, 26, day laborer;  Michell, son, b. Apr 1879, 21, day laborer; Lizzie, daughter, b. Dec 1883, 16, at school; Stephen son, b. Mar 1885, 5, day laborer; Julia, daughter, b. Jan 1891, at school,  9; Albert, son, b. Jan 1893, 7, at school; Maggie, daughter, b. Jun 1897, 2.



The 1900 Federal Census for the U.S. Indian Industrial School, Mt. Pleasant, Isabella, Michigan line 62 lists Southbird, Lizzie, b. Oct 1882, age 17.



The Durant Roll field (#44 page 43) notes have Isaac Shaw ne we pe nay se, spelling now Shawabinesse, or Southbird, age 65, resides Sutton's Bay. Wife is Mary nee Chippeway, 55. Children are: John, 38; Mitchell, 27; Stephen,23; Albert, 15; Margaret, 12; Julia, 17, died 17 Jun 1908.



By the time of the 1910 Federal Census Isaac had moved his family to Acme, Grand Traverse county. Surname is misspelled Southberg. Family consists of Isaac, head, 61, married once for 44 years, farm laborer doing odd jobs, Ottawa, parents Ottawa; Mary, wife, 56, married once for 44 years, 14 children born, 6 children living, occupation gives as basket manufacturing at home, Chippewa, father Chippewa, mother Ottawa; John, son, 40, lumberman at lumber camp, Ottawa, father Ottawa, mother Chippewa; Mitchell, 34, married once for 14 years, lumberman at lumber camp, Ottawa, father Ottawa, mother Chippewa; Lucy, daughter-in-law, 47, married once for 14 years, no children born, no occupation, Ottawa, father Ottawa, mother Chippewa; Stephen, son, 26, lumberman at lumber camp, Ottawa, father Ottawa, mother Chippewa; Albert, son, 16, farm laborer - working out, Ottawa, father Ottawa, mother Chippewa; Maggie, daughter, 14, student at Indian School, Ottawa, father Ottawa, mother Chippewa.


Mitchel, Lucy and Stephen are counted twice. The 1910 federal census of Wilson township, Kalkaska county has Mitchel Southbird, boarder, 31, married once, married 11 years, full Ottawa, laborer at LSI&C Co., Lucy Southbird, boarder, 47, married twice, married 11 years, no children born, full Ottawa, and Stephen Southbird, boarder, 25, single, full Ottawa, laborer at LSI&C Co. They are boarders in the home of Stephen Akin.


If the answers about the number of children born and living are true, Mary gave birth to two children between 1900 and 1910. These children also died between 1900 and 1910. Of the 14 children she had only John, Mitchell, Lizzie, Stephen, Albert and Maggie are still living.

On 4 Nov 1911 in Yuba, Grand Traverse county, Lizzie, age 30, b. Leelanau, was married to Eli Nada, 40, b. Charlevoix. It was Eli's second marriage and he is listed as son of Geo. Nada and Mary Madagame.




Son John dies 17 Sep 1914 in Leland, Leelanau county, of tb. His birth is given as 20 Apr 1871 in Leelanau county, his is married and buried in Peshawbestown. Informant is Mrs. Mary Southbird.


Isaac dies on 31 Oct 1914 in Acme. Son Stephen is the informant and gives Isaac's birth date as 23 Jun 1845 in Grand Traverse county. Isaac died of apoplexy and is buried in Sutton's Bay.



On 8 May 1916 in Elk Rapids, Antrim county, Margaret Southbird, age 19, b. Suttons Bay, married Clarence Russell, 22, b. Elk Rapids, son of Geo. Russell and Mary Borrasaw.





With the start of the World War Albert and Stephen registered for the draft. Albert registered on 5 Jun 1917, gives his birth as 14 Nov 1893, Acme, Grand Traverse county, residence as Elk Rapids, Antrim county, medium height, medium build, black hair and eyes.

Son Michael/Mitchell (names seem to be interchangeable) died in Acme on 11 Nov 1917 at age 40 of Brights Disease. Burial is given as Traverse City and Suttons Bay.



Stephen registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918, giving his name as Stephen Nachquagashagons Southbird, birth as 20 Apr 1883, residence as East Jordan, Charlevoix county, medium height, medium build, black hair and eyes.



Albert died in France on 6 Nov 1918 and is buried in Peshawbestown, Leelanau county.





By the 1920  federal census of Acme, Grand Traverse, Stephen Southbird is head of the household, 34, laborer on the county road, with Louise, wife, 28; Mary, mother, 68; also in the home is William Nada, brother-in-law, 42, laborer on the county road; Lizzie, sister, 36; Julia, niece, 9; and Percy, nephew, 6.



A marriage license was issued in Leelanau county on 7 Jun 1923 to Steven Southbird, 38, born Peshawbestown and Eliza Sands, 24, born Omena, daughter of Isaac Maska. The area for the date of marriage, witnesses, is blank meaning the marriage did not take place.


On 5 Jun 1926 Stephen, 41, b. Leelanau County, married Lena Francis, 20, b. Leelanau county, daughter of Frank Francis and Mary Ann Stevens. Both say it is their first marriage.



Sadly Lena died 28 Feb 1929, Inland township, Benzie. She was born 5 Sep 1905 and buried in Peshawbestown.



The 1930 federal census shows the family now living on Pine Street in Elk Rapids, Antrim county. Listed as head of the family is Elizabeth Nada, 47, widowed, full Ottawa, value of home $300. With her are daughter, Julia Bird, 19 married at 17, full Ottawa, son-in-law Julius Bird, 24, married at 22, mixed Chippewa, laborer at odd jobs, granddaughter Delora Bird, 10 months, mixed Ottawa/Chippewa, brother Stephen Southbird, 44, widowed, full Ottawa, laborer at odd jobs, Elizabeth Southbird, niece, 6, full Ottawa, Isaac Southbird, nephew, 3 year 6 months, full Ottawa and mother Mary Southbird, 81, widowed, full Ottawa.



Sadly Steven dies 31 Jul 1934 in Elk Rapids, Antrim county of Tb. He was born 17 Apr 1885 and buried in Suttons Bay. Informant was sister Elizabeth Nada, who now is caring for Steven's children.



Mary dies on 25 Jan 1937. Informant is daughter Elizabeth Nada who says Mary was born 7 Jun 1851 in Omena, daughter of Steve Chippewa. Mary died of arteriosclerosis and is buried in Peshawbestown.



Now only two of Mary's children survive - Elizabeth and Margaret.

ELIZABETH

Elizabeth married Eli K. Nada in 1911 [see above for copy]. However this couple is together before the Durant Roll was taken. According to the field notes [also above] Eli's first wife died in July 1908, but they were not living together at the time. Eli and Elizabeth have a daughter Anna, age 2.


Daughter Ida May, born 10 Feb 1909, dies in Alden, Antrim county on 11 May 1910 and is buried in Kewadin. She is listed as daughter of Eli Nada and Lizzie Southberg.





What became of Eli is unknown.

William Keshata Nada [Eli's brother] registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918. He lists Mrs. Lizzie Nada of East Jordan as his nearest relative.




On 13 Sep 1919, Lizzie and William Nada applied for a marriage license. William is 41, b. Charlevoix, resides Elk Rapids, son of George Nada and Mary Madagamee. Both William and Lizzie state they have been married once before. There is no return that the marriage ever took place.




On the 1920 federal census the family is living with Stephen Southbird in Acme, Grand Traverse. William is 4, Lizzie is 36, her children Julia, 9 and Percy J. 6.


William died 5 Jan 1923 in Hudson township, Mackinac county. Wife is listed as Lizzie.



Son Percy Julius Nada died 15 Dec 1925. He was born 10 Aug 1914 and is buried in Kewadin.



Daughter Anna, 18, married Jesse King on 29 Jun 1925 in Suttons Bay.



Daughter Julia married Julius Bird on 6 Jun 1928 in Elk Rapids.


The 1930 federal census shows the family now living on Pine Street in Elk Rapids, Antrim county. Listed as head of the family is Elizabeth Nada, 47, widowed, full Ottawa, value of home $300. With her are daughter, Julia Bird, 19 married at 17, full Ottawa, son-in-law Julius Bird, 24, married at 22, mixed Chippewa, laborer at odd jobs, granddaughter Delora Bird, 10 months, mixed Ottawa/Chippewa, brother Stephen Southbird, 44, widowed, full Ottawa, laborer at odd jobs, Elizabeth Southbird, niece, 6, full Ottawa, Isaac Southbird, nephew, 3 year 6 months, full Ottawa and mother Mary Southbird, 81, widowed, full Ottawa.


Daughter Anna, 23, son-in-law Jesse King, 30 and their daughter Mary L. 4 6/12 are living in Lansing, Ingham county. Jesse is an assembler in an auto body factory.


Granddaughter Elizabeth Louise Bird, born 11 Oct 1930 died 9 Feb 1931 in Elk Rapids. She is buried in Kewadin.


Granddaughter Phyllis Ann King born 24 Aug 1931, died 9 Oct 1931 in Elk Rapids. She is buried in Kewadin.


Daughter Julia Bird died 3 Feb 1937 in Elk Rapids of Tb.


Son-in-law Julius Bird died 16 Sep 1938 in Detroit, Wayne county, also of Tb.


1940 federal census of Elk Rapids has Elizabeth Nada, head, 56 widowed; Elizabeth Southbird, niece, 16; Isaac Southbird, nephew, 13; Delora Berg, granddaughter, 10; Percy Berg, grandson, 8; Margaret, granddaughter, 6;  [Note that Berg should be Bird]

Elizabeth has lost two husbands and been left to raise three orphaned grandchildren plus her orphaned niece and nephew.

Daughter Anna, 33, her husband Jesse King, 40 and their daughters Mary Louise, 14 and Evelyn Grace, 3 are living in Maple Rapids, Clinton county. Jesse is a line worker at Fisher Body.



Elizabeth died 27 Jan 1955 and is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Kewadin, Antrim county.  Of the five children born to Elizabeth only daughter Anna survived her.



MARGARET


Margaret married Clarence Russell on 8 May 1916 - see marriage record above.


On his World War I draft registration of 5 Jun 1917, Clarence gives his birth as 24 Apr 1894. He is married with one child, resides in Elk Rapids and is a common laborer for the Charcoal Iron company of Elk Rapids. Clarrence is 5' 10", slender, has grey eyes and brown hair.




The 1920 federal census has the family living in T27N R5W [Bear Lake township] Kalkaska county. Clarence is 25, occupation is cutting wood at wood camp, [probably living at the camp], Margaret is 23, children are Ivan, 3 years 7 months and Mary, 10 months.



On 26 Dec 1922 in Suttons Bay, Isaac Russel died of bronchitis. He was only 13 days old, and is buried in Peshawbestown.




By the 1930 federal census the family is back in Elk Rapids, living on Gurnay Street. Clarence is 35, married at 21, no occupation, mixed-blood Chippewa; Margaret is 33, married at 18, full Ottawa; Ivan L., 13; Mary, 11; Myrtle, 9; Carl, 6; Doris 3 8/12; and Nettie M., 1 8/12 are listed as mixed-blood, Ottawa and Chippewa.



Margaret and Clarence lost their oldest child, Ivan on 13 Dec 1936 in Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was serving in the U.S. Army, [Private. Hq. Battery. 8 Field. Artillery] Cause of death was a skull fracture due to a fall. Ivan is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.

The 1940 Federal Census has the family living at 601 Grant Street in Traverse City, Grand Traverse county. Clarence is 46 and gives no occupation; Margaret, 43; Carl, 16 lists his occupation as new worker; Doris, 13; Nellie, 11; Jake, 8; Bill, 4; and Ivanna Lea, 1. The family states they lived in the same place in 1935.

Mary is listed in the 1940 Federal Census as a patient at the Michigan State Sanitarium, Marion Township, Livingston county. She is 21 and was living in Traverse City in 1935.


Myrtle is living in Grand Rapids, Kent county, block 488. She was 19, cousin to family 119, lived in Traverse City in 1935.


On 1 Apr 1941 in Grand Rapids Myrtle married John H. Markus.

World War II Draft Registration gives Clarence's middle name as Lawrence, birth date as 24 Apr 1894, residence as 601 Grant St., Traverse City, with wife Margaret. He is unemployed.


Mary died 18 Nov 1945 at Howell, Livingston county. Her obit was printed in the Traverse City Record Eagle on 20 Nov 1945. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City.




Clarence died 2 Jan 1962 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. His obituary was printed in the Traverse City Record Eagle of 3 Jan 1962.




Margaret died 29 May 1973 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. Her obituary was printed in the Traverse City Record Eagle of 29 May 1973.
