Peter McClellan

Peter McClellan / Shaw-waw-naw-ke-zhick was born about 1837. He died between 1880 when he appears on the federal census and 1890 when his wife remarries.

The first record found for Peter is the 1861 Annuity Roll. Grand River Ottawa received two payments under different treaties. Shaw-waw-ne-ke-zhick, #2/3 in Pe-nay-se's band, 1 male, 1 female, no children, receiving $9.24 and $6.82

1864 - Shaw-waw-ne-ke-zhick #4 in Pe-nay-se's band, 1 male, 1 female, 3 children $17.10

1865 - Shaw-waw-ne-ke-zhick #5 in Pe-nay-se's band, 1 male, 1 female, 2 children $19.10
1865 - Shaw-waw-ne-ke-zhick's infant #25 in Pe-nay-se's band, 0 male, 0 female, 1 child $4.90

1868 - Shaw-waw-ne-ke-zhick #3 in Pe-nay-se's band, 1 male, 1 female, 3 children $79.25

On 22 Oct 1870 Shaw waw ne ke zhick purchased land in Oceana county:

Son Robert was born 4 Oct 1874 in Bridgeton, Newaygo county.






The 1880 federal census of Brooks, Newaygo county has Peter, 43, a common laborer. Wife Madlin is 40, sons William, 22 and George, 18 are also common laborers. The census next lists three sons - Toan, 10, Bedan, 6 and Aigan, 5 [when Peter and Adeline should have 4 children in this time period - Frank, Herbert, Inger and Rachel]. Last listed is son Levi at age 6 months.


It is unknown when Peter died. Adeline remarried on 6 Nov 1890 in Newaygo to Andrew Echtinew.


George, 28, married Minnie Barber, nee Timmons, on 18 Nov 1893 in Walton, Grand Traverse county.



Inger, 22, married Frank Thompson, 26, on 16 Dec 1895 in Newaygo county. 
 

William H. 36, married Maggie Timms, 22 in Walton, Grand Traverse county, on 4 Apr 1899.




By the 1900 federal census of Garfield township, Newaygo county Adaline Echtinaw is divorced. She is 59, had 11 children, 9 living, is a farmer, and says her father was born in Canada. Living with her is daughter Ida, 19 and grandson Gag, b. May 1900.
 

Ida, 21, married Dell Thompson, 27, on 14 Apr 1903 in Newaygo county.


The Durant Field notes #4 page 56b states Shaw-waw-ne-ke-zhick is dead, wife Adeline (McClellan) Echtinaw is 70, lists children Mary, William, George, Frank, Herbert, Ingar, Rachel, Levi and Ida.


Levi, 30,  married Emma Potter, 32, daughter of Chancey Reynolds on 27 Apr 1910 in White Cloud, Newaygo county.  It was her second marriage.



The 1910 census of Garfield township Newaygo has Levi P., age 39, laborer in woodenware factory and wife Emma, 32.  Nearby is the family of Frank J. Thompson, 39, laborer at odd jobs, wife Ingar B., 34, 6 children born, 6 living, son Frossard W., 16, laborer at chair factory, daughter Lizzie B., 14, sons Alroy, 12, Clifford J., 9, Irwin F., 5 and Millard F. 7 months.


George is living in Springfield township, Kalkaska county in 1910. He is 48 and a farmer. Family includes wife Minnie, 37, stepsons, Perry Barber, 19 and Francis Barber, 17, daughter Gertrude, 14, son Herbert, 13 and daughter Gladus, 6.



Levi's wife Emma died in Brooks township, Newaygo county on 28 Jan 1915.


The 1920 census of Springfield township, Kalkaska county has George, 57, farmer, Minnie M., 47, children Gertrude A., 23, Glydis M., 15, Verdeth V., 8, Alva A., 7, Willard W., 3, stepson Frankie Barber, 27 and grandson Leonard G. Becker, 4.




In 1920 Levi is living in Petoskey, Emmet county. He is 38, a laborer at a block company. With him are wife Elizabeth, 30, sister-in-law Josephine Taylor, 32 and father-in-law Peter Taylor, 54, widowed, laborer at lime kiln.

Levi is living in Hayes township, Charlevoix county in 1930. He is 50 and a farmer. Wife Elizabeth is 36, son Thurow L., 10, daughter, Wannetta, 5. Mother Adeline is either 89 or 99, widowed.


George 65, farmer, wife Minnie, 57, daughter Alvah M., 17 and son William W., 14 are still in Springfield township, Kalkaska county in 1930.



Adeline McClellan died 30 Dec 1930 in Hayes township, Charlevoix. Informant is Levi who states his mother was born in Grand Haven, aged 99 years, 6 months, 23 days.





 Frank died 20 Jan 1932 in Springfield township, Kalkaska county. His age was given as 51 years, 11 months 3 days and he was widowed.





George died 21 Oct 1937 in Garfield township, Newaygo county. His birth was given as 22 Apr 1863.


George is buried in Clark Cemetery, Springfield Cemetery, Kalkaska county.



 1940 Federal census, Hayes township, Charlevoix county has Levi, 59, wife Elizabeth, 49 and son Thurlow, 19.




Ida Markham died 6 Mar 1945. She is widowed and born 21 Mar 1882 in Newaygo according to "Seeking Michigan".

Descendants of Angeline Newton


From the durant roll field notes page 14/44 it is learned that Angeline, 56, now wife of William Newton, was married first to Shing-go-nay-cawse, who died before 1907. Two children are listed for the couple. A son who is deceased [George], and Julia, wife of Thomas Wah-sa-quam.

 

GEORGE


George, who used the surname Newton and called William his father, was married to Mary Pabo on 27 Jan 1896 in Northport.





They had three daughters: Annie, b. c1899, Ella, b. 17 May 1902 and Ida, b. 24 Mar 1904.
Sadly death struck this family.

George died first, on 22 Nov 1903, Inland township, Benzie county.


Mary died on 12 Dec 1904 in Leelanau township, Leelanau county.



Baby Ida died soon after her mother, on 22 Dec 1904.


Annie and Ella were raised by Mary's family and used the surname Pabo.

What became of Annie is currently unknown. There is a death certificate for Ann Pabo who died 3 Jun 1927 at the infirmary, Grayling, Crawford county, father unknown, mother Mary, but her age is given as about 19.

Ella married Walter M.Coleman on 8 Dec 1919 in Muskegon, Muskegon county.



In 1940 Walter. 42, and Ella, 36, are living in Burton, Genesee county. They have eight children: William, 20, Walter W., 18, Albert, 16, Bennie R., 15, Yvonne, 13, Ronald, 11, Phyllis, 6 and Richard E., 5.



When Walter died 3 May 1960, Ella requested a military tombstone.


From son Ronald's obit it is learned that all of Walter and Ella's children have passed.

" Ronald M. Coleman, age 82, passed away at home on August 19, 2011.

He was born in Flint, Michigan in 1929 where he grew up, graduating from Bendle High School in Flint, playing for the 1946 city championship baseball team.  After briefly working for Fisher Body (GM), he enlisted in the Army where he was in the new Universal Military Training unit in Fort Knox, before  attending the University of Kentucky earning an Engineering degree.  DuPont recruited him to work in Wilmington where he met his wife Catherine.  After a few years in South Bend, IN he returned to Wilmington to work for the Star Enterprise Delaware City refinery where he retired after 32 years as Electrical & Instrumentation Supervisor in 1993.

Ron was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Ella Coleman, brothers Bill, Jack, Benny, Albert, Dick, and Patrick, sisters Phyllis, Yvonne..."

No siblings are listed as surviving Ron. He is survived by 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren plus numerous nieces and nephews.


JULIA

Julia was born about 1870. On 1 Nov 1892 in Hayes Township, Charlevoix county, Julia Lewis John, 22, daughter of Lewis John and Osayohuequot married Thomas Wasaquom, 25, son of Peter Wasaquom and Mary Nawaquom.


To this couple nine children were born: Alice, Lydia, Elizabeth, Lucy, John, Anna, Lucy Emily, Nellie and Bertha.

In 1900 the family in living in Centerville, Leelanau county. Thomas is 33 and a day laborer, Julia is 30, Alice, 5, Lydia, 4 and Elizabeth 9/12. With the family is cousin David Nohaquom, 27 , also a day laborer.


Daughter Lydia died on 14 Jan 1905 in Inland township, Benzie county of consumption. She was 8 years, 1 month and 16 days old.



Lucy died on 5 Oct 1906 in Inland township, Benzie county, of tubercular meningitis. She was 5 years and 6 days old.


The 1910 Federal Census has the family in Homestead township, Benzie county. Thomas is 43, married once, married 18 years, a laborer/wood cutter. Julia is 39, married once, 7 children born, 5 living, basket maker. Children are Alice, 15, Elizabeth, 10, John, 6, Annie, 4 and Lucy 6 months. Thomas' mother Mary, 60, married once for 45 years, 7 children born, 4 living, basket maker, is also with the family.



Also in 1910, Alice married Edward Judson on 18 Apr 1910 in Peshawbestown, Leelanau county.

Daughter Lucy Emily died 27 Apr 1913 in Homestead township, Benzie county of tubercular meningitis. She is 3 years, 6 months, 15 days old.


Alice dies on 18 Feb 1917 in Lake township, Benzie county, of tuberculosis. 



Also in 1917 Elizabeth married Clarence Nada on 5 Sep in Frankfort, Benzie county.



The 1920 federal census finds Thomas and Julia living in Lake township, Benzie county. Thomas, 53, is a laborer in the woods, Julia is 50, Elizabeth is 20 (and listed as single), John, 16, Anna, 14, Nellie, 7 and Bertha, 4. Also with the family is son-in-law Edward Judson, 28, (listed as single), laborer in the woods, and grandson Harry Judson, 9.


Elizabeth and Clarence divorced on 13 Jan 1921 in Benzie county.


 Julia died 1 Apr 1923 in Lake township, Benzie county, of pneumonia.
 

Thomas died 9 Jun 1927 in Lake township, Benzie county, of pneumonia.


They are buried in Champion Hill cemetery, Benzie county.


1930 finds the children out on their own. Bertha, 16, is a servant in the John P. Brown home in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois.


Elizabeth, age 30, is a servant in the Sherburn B. Henning family in Grand Rapids, Kent county.


Have not found John, Anna or Nellie in 1930.

Anna married Nicholas Bailey on 17 Oct 1931 in Hart, Oceana county. The couple had 4 children, Alice, Wayne, LeRoy and Nicholas Jr.

Elizabeth married Arthur Hill on 20 Apr 1935 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse county.


1940 finds Nellie, 28, in Frankfort, Benzie county, servant, in the Muehlmann family.


1940 Wayland township, Allegan county finds Elizabeth (Bush) Wasacquam, 32, and her children Louise, 9, Donna, 8, and Donald, 4. They are living with her parents. While the marriage date of John T. Wasaquam and Elizabeth Bush is 13 Dec 1940 it appears they were together longer. Madonna Chilsholm's obituary of 16 Jul 2011 names John as her father.


Elizabeth and Arthur Hill are living in Acme township, Grand Traverse county in 1940. Arthur is 52, working at an interior decorator, Elizabeth, 40, David, 14, Thomas, 6, Evelyn, 4 and Pauline, 1. Nephew Harry Judson, 29, is also living with the family, working as a farm laborer.




There is a tombstone for John Wasaquam at Champion Hill, Benzie county, but the birth year is incorrect.

 Anna died 28 Jan 1965 and is buried in Brookside Cemetery in Scottville, Mason county. Nicholas died 13 Sep 1983.






Elizabeth Hill died 6 Nov 1982 and is buried in Yuba cemetery, Grand Traverse county along with sons David and Thomas.








Bertha died 1986 and is buried at Greensky Hill cemetery, Charlevoix county.


Do not know if Nellie is still living.
