James Judson




James Judson was born about 1844, father not yet identified, mother said to be named Minerva. His first wife was Ah-zho-ne-quah/Orh-ah-qua.

Son Edward died 9 Feb 1880 in Eden at age 2, daughter Martha died 30 Mar 1880 in Eden at age 4.

James' second wife was Alice. She was born about 1849, the daughter of Nabenaykezhick.

Daughter Julia was born 9 Mar 1886 in Eden, Mason, Michigan.


In 1890 James and wife Kah-go-yah, residing in Custer, Mason county was listed as #825 on appendix E, Phineas Pam-to-pee & 1,371 Potawatomi.

Daughter Julia was sent to the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School under the name of Julia Newton (step-father's name)

James died 22 Mar 1912 in Manistee. Cause of death was accidental drowning. Buried at Oak Grove.



Alice died 19 Oct 1925 in Freesoil. Obit mentions her son John Newton and grandsons. Her husband and two daughters preceded her in death.

Jacob Tipsico c1827-1912


Jacob Tipsico was said to be born about 1827 in Michigan. His mother was named A-nos.

Jacob was married multiple times.

On 31 Aug 1868 Mary Ann Tipsico, age 19, born Kent county, was married to Ah-pe-twa-se-go, age 23,  and son Johnson Tipsico, age 19, born Macomb county was married to July Black Elk. Ceremony was performed by R. P. Sheldon, Minister. [Was Mary Ann the daughter of Jacob? She is not listed as his child on the Gruett roll. If she was his daughter, she had a different mother than Johnson, she is not the same age as Johnson, or one of the birth places was in error].




Daughter Nancy, age 17, was married 13 Jun 1869 in Isabella, Michigan, to George Brown, age 24. Place of birth for both was given as Lapeer county. R. P. Sheldon, minister performed the ceremony with Jacob Jackson and Nancy Jackson as witnesses.

On the blind schedule, Johnson is listed as partly blind, partly self-supporting, cause of blindness unknown, never an inmate at an institution for the blind.

Daughter Eliza married Charles Marsh on 5 May 1885 in Isabella. H. S. Taft, minister, performed the ceremony, with Joseph Bradley and Minnie B. Hawley as witnesses.


 

Son David was admitted to Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania on 8 Aug 1889 for five years. Father was listed as Jacob, mother as dead. David was discharged 4 Jul 1893 due to ill health.

Son David was readmitted to Carlisle on 23 Sep 1893 and discharged on 27 Dec 1894 as incapable and unworthy. 





Son David died 28 Dec 1898 in Isabella. Age 27, single, buried in Chatfield Cemetery. Mother's name not given.

Almont citizens are planning for a big home-coming celebration to be held there July 29 to August 1. The guest of honor will be Tipsico, an Indian, who is said to be 103 years old.

From Past and Present of Isabella county.

Jacob died 29 Jun 1912 at Wapole Island, Canada. His age was given as 87, born 1825 in Michigan. Parents were given as father Bash Keshig and mother not known. Information from his daughter, Eliza Wabeno, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. 



Daughter Eliza died 12 May 1929 in Mt. Pleasant, Isabella, Michigan. Parents were given as Jacob Tipsico and Mary Williams.

"Their first school was a little log house standing in the present corporation of Richmond, about 1839, having to go one and a half miles through the woods on a trail: no road cut. In order to slide on the ice they would fit wood to their feet and make holes with burning irons to fasten them on to their bare feet. Their first skates were made of wood by Tipsico, the big Indian, and presented to Zenas."

Sarah Tipsico and Sam Eaton were the parents of Clara Mae Eaton, said to be born 15 May 1892 in Mount Pleasant, Isabella, Michigan. 



The 1908 marriage of Clara Eaton to Andrew Hinman gave Clara's parents as Sampson Edan and Sarah Tuphschu. 




The 1918 military records of Aaron Shaw list Mrs. Clara Hinman [nee Eaton] as sister. 





The 1920 marriage of Grace Shawboose and Samuel Kahgegab gave Grace's parents as John Shawboose and Eliza Tipsico. 


The 1920 marriage of Aaron Shaw and Lucille Anderson gave Aaron's parents as John Shaw and Sarah Tipisco.
