Aken



Aken was said to be born in 1838 in Green Bay.

A-ken is first found in the 1857 Annuity roll under Chief Aish-quay-go-nay-be, line 21. This band lived near present day Elk Rapids. 

Besides himself, Aken has one adult female and one child in his househould. Received $15.18.

Daughter Luceene Aiken, age 17,  married William Nahoquoum, age 22,  on 22 Jan 1877 in Charlevoix.



Son Stephen was married on 4 Apr 1877 in Charlevoix, Michigan to Jane Redbird. His name was given as John Achan, age 26, Jane was 17.


On 27 May 1878, John sold the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 2, T29N, R9W, consisting of 40 acres to Dozzetto O. Roberts for $150. Roberts was "excepting and receiving eight and one half acres more or less conveyed to Mary E. Landon by said John Aken on September third 1874." [Antrim county land records volume E page 419]





Grandson Stephen Jr., was born 3 Sep 1878




Granddaughter Lucy Naquam was born c1879.

Is this Stephen who would have been in his 20s or is this John who would have been in his 40s, or someone else? 

On 25 Mar 1881 John Akin, age 43, married Julia Smoke, age 15. Ceremony performed by Andrew Anderson, Justice of the Peace, with Edward Naska and Mary Smoke as witnessess.




Grandaughter Mabone was born c1880/81

Aken died 1 Dec 1881; his daughter Julia, age 9, also died on 1 Dec 1881. Cause for both was small pox.

Son Stephen, age 47,  was married 27 Dec 1898 in Horton Bay, Charlevoix, Michigan to Theresa Pedwadum, age 21, daughter of John Pedwadum and Margaret Agosa.  Stephen was said to be born at Susan Lake, parents as Akin Na-la-tu-chin and don't know. Theresa's name was given as Susie Pe-twa-e-tum, father at John Pe-twa-e-tum, mother don't know.

Son Stephen's wife Theresa died 26 May 1910 in Wilson township, Kalkaska, Michigan




Son Stephen, age 60, married Sarah V. Beebe, age 53, on 28 Oct 1911 in Otsego, Michigan. Stephen gave his birth place as Elk Rapids and parents names as Stephen Aiken and Miskwauquat Kawatashkawa. Says this was his third marriage. 




Son Stephen died 28 Apr 1915 in Mancelona, Antrim, Michigan of acute bronchitus. His age was given as 62, father's name as Frank. 



Granddaughter Lucy Enos, nee Lucy Naquam, 41, married Amos Augustus, 42, on 22 Sep 1921 in Charlevoix. It was his first marriage, her second.



Granddaughter Tilllie (daughter of Stephen) died 21 Feb 1925 in Antrim county, Michigan, leaving five young children.

Joseph Bird

Joseph Bird was born about 1877 in Ontario, said to be the son of Peter and a Native woman.

When Joseph came to Michigan and where/when he met Louisa are unknown. Their children were born before their marriage.


Son Peter was born 21 Mar 1902 in Elk Rapids to Joseph Bird and Louisa Ance . Sadly he died 5 Apr 1902. Cause of death was simple syphilitic atrophy. Burial was in Kewadin.


Son Julius Henry was born 14 Jun 1905.



Joseph, age 31, of Elk Rapids, born Canada, laborer, son of Peter and don't know, was married on 10 Sep 1908 to Louisa Ance, 35, of Elk Rapids, born Michigan, housework, daughter of Micheal Ance and Mary A. Boursaw. It was the first marriage for both. Ceremony was performed by Eust? Faucher, priest.

On 12 Sep 1918, Joseph registered for the draft. He and Louisa were living in Cooks, Schoolcraft, Michgan. Occupation was woodsman, employer was Edward Smith. Joseph said he was a citizen of Great Britian from a reservation in Ontario, Canada. He was tall, medium build, with black hair and eyes.

Officers Autdo Hounds in Trailing Suspects

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Aug. 14

--Bloodhounds refused to take up the red pepper tail left by robbers who entered four stores in Elk Rapids the night of July 26, but detectives didn't, and as a retult, Thom Andrews and Julius Bird, Indians, and Lester Kimball, are in jail at Bellaire awaiting trail on a breaking and entering charge.

    Four stores, those of the Copoperative association, Martineau's jewelry store, Andrew's hardward and Wilson's grocery were all burglarized on the night of July 28. In each the burglars left behind them a trail of red pepper, a pecurliar sort of a pepper much coarser than the average variety.

    This proved their undoing, for detectives found the remains of the can of pepper in their rooms.

Wife Louisa Ann died 2 Dec 1931 in Milton township, Antrim, Michigan. Her birth was given as 23 Jul 1873, parents as Mitchell Ance and Mary Ann Boursaw. Cause of death was angina pectoris, burial was in Kewadin. 


Granddaughter Margaret was born 22 Apr 1933.

Daughter-in-law Julia died  3 Feb 1937 in Elk Rapids. Her age was given as 26 years, 14 days, parents as Eli and Elizabeth Nady. Cause of death was tuberculosis.



Son Julius died 16 Sep 1938 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. His birth was given as 14 Jun 1905, parents as Joseph Byrd/Bird and Louise Ance. Cause was pulmonary tuberculosis, burial at Holy Sepulchre. Informant was Charles Gould.



Joseph's date of death is unknown, after 1931.
