Charles Martell

Charles Martell was born 30 Aug 1896 in Saint Ignace, Mackinac, Michigan, the son of Abraham Martell and Margereth Moses.

Abraham, the son of Joseph Martell and Genevieve Dufault was born 17 Dec 1845 and baptized at St. Ignatuis churuch in St. Ignace. He first had two sons with Madeliene Payette, named Ignatius Benjamin (Enos) and Joseph Abraham. Abraham then had one daughter with  Sophie Derusha, named Sophia. He then married(?) Maggie Moses. See below for the children of this couple.

His father, Abraham, died 10 May 1898 in Sherwood, Mackinac county.

It is unknown if Charles and family were living in Burt Lake on 15 Oct 1900 when the village was burned.

On 20 May 1918 in Burt Lake, Charles married Mary Shananaquet, daughter of Jonas Shananaquet and Susan Negake. They were married by the Catholic priest.


On 5 Jun 1918 in Emmet county, Charles registered for the draft. He gives his birth as 30 Aug 1896 and is described as medium height and build, dark brown eyes, black hair. Charles is married, lives in Brutus and works for Hart and Ingl... in section 2 of McKinley township, Emmet county.

Francis died 19 Mar 1930 of jaundice and convulsions.

Clarence died on 27 Sep 1931 in Burt Township, Cheboygan county.


Daughter Agnes was stillborn 3 Mar 1933 in Burt township, Cheboygan county vol 3 page 7



Daughter Roseanna was born 9 Jun 1934 in Cheboygan county.

Daughter Mary Jane was born 19 Jun 1936 in Burt township, Cheboygan county. She died 22 Jun 1936. No real cause given - infant.

Daughter Eileen married 5 Aug 1946 in Pellston, Emmet county to Leon Ernest Haig.

Wife Mary died 13 Sep 1952 in Lansing, Ingham county


Charles died 11 Apr 1982 in Petoskey, Emmet county.




He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery #2 in Burt Lake.
