Malinda Louise Pontiac 1898-1993

Malinda Louise Pontiac was said to be born 3 Jun 1898 in Clare, Michigan, daughter of James Pontiac/Was-was-sum/Lightening and Mary Wahboose. Father James Pontiac was said to be born 21 Oct 1869, the son of John Pontiac (1830-1880) and Elizabeth Bailey (1848-1881). 

Malinda is second from left, her father James is on the far right. Year and location unknown.




James married Mary Wahboose on 21 Mar 1899 in Wise, Isabella, Michigan. Mary Wahboose was born c1876, in Saginaw, the daughter of George Waboose and Nancy Fisher.

1900 Federal Census - not yet found. Family "should be" in Isabella county based on the 1899 marriage and sister Grace's birth on 10 Nov 1900 in Denver township, Isabella county.

Sister Amelia was said to be born 13 Jun 1903 in Isabella  county

Sister Nancy was born in 1904 and sadly died 4 Nov 1904 in Nottawa, Isabella county.

Brother Jesse was born 10 Jul 1905.

Malinda, and later some of her siblings, attended Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School. Malinda first entered 1 Sep 1906 for a period of 8 years. Her age is given as eight.

Twin brothers Roy and Robert were born  13 Nov 1916. Roy died 13 Nov 1916. Robert died 2 Dec 1916.

Malinda met August John Hinman. Gus was born 29 Jul 1884, son of Smith Hinman and Elizabeth Moby.

Son Robert Lavre was born 25 Apr 1934 in Kalkaska.

Son Bruce Smith Hinman was born 17 Aug 1937 in Kalamazoo

Green, William, 55, laborer on farm, lived in Jackson, Jackson county in 1935

Violet C., daughter, 14, lived in rural Kalkaska county in 1935.


1940 Federal Census for Gus Hinman, Melinda and children has yet to be found.

Daughter Cecelia Hinman was born in 1942

Daughter Violet married Paul J. Bush on 12 Mar 1942 in Parchment, Kalamazoo county.


Son-in-law Paul Bush died 9 May 1943.




On 2 Jan 1945 William filed for divorce from Malinda citing desertion. Divorce was granted 16 Apr 1945. None of their children were listed.





Daughter Violet married Raymond Zeeryp, 24 Apr 1946, Parchment, Kalamazoo county.
