Jacob Chibness


Jacob Chibness was said to be born 9 Apr 1856 in Mount Pleasant, Isabella, Michigan. He was the son of Colin Chibnas and Eliza Silas (from his marriage certificate) or James Chibnas (from his death certificate) and/or Betsy (from the 1900 census).

Son Samuel was said to be born 1 Nov 1882 (from his death certificate)

Daughter Louisa was said to be born in Dec 1885

Daughter Jennie was said to be born in Jan 1888

Daughter Ida was said to be born in Jan 1891

The 1893 City Directory for Bay City lists both James and Jacob as living in Pinconning.

Jacob married Mary Jacobs on 7 Dec 1893 in Pinconning, Bay, Michigan. He gives his age of 35, parents as Colin Chibnas and Eliza Silas, his first marriage. Her age was given as 40, daughter of ___ Jacob and unknown. This was her first marriage. Born were born in W Bay City. Ceremony was performed by Marum Harley, Clergyman; witnesses were Daniel Covert and B C Pauldo(?)

On 13 Jan 1903 daughter Jennie, age 16, was married in Pinconning to James Andrews, age 22. Her parents are listed as Jacob and Mary; his parents as Henry (Andrews) and Lucy Handis. Ceremony performed by Henry C. Mansfield, Justice of the Peace, with Joseph Peters and Paul Peters as witnesses. 



The 1904 Historical Record of the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School lists Chibess, Louisa, Chippewa, of Pinconning, daughter of Jacob Chibness, age 16.



The 1905 Historical Record of the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School  lists Louisa Chibness, Chippewa, daughter of Jacob Chibness of Pinconning, full blood, age 14, admitted Nov 1903 for 3 years; and Ida Chibness, Chippewa, daughter of Jacob James of Pinconning, full blood, age 14, admitted Sep 1903, withdrawn Jan 1905 for poor health - dead.



Daughter Ida died 14 Feb 1905 in Pinconning.. Her age was 15, cause of death cunsumption, parents Jacob Chibness and Mary Jacobs. Burial was in Pinconning. 


Granddaughter Ethel Andrews, child of daughter Jennie, was said to be born 25 Dec 1905.

The 1906 Historical Record of the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School lists Louisa Chibness, Chippewa, daughter of Jacob Chibness of Pinconning, age 15, admitted Nov 1903 for 3 years, withdrawn July 1906 - went home.




Mother Betsey died 17 Aug 1906 in Pinconning townshp; cause of death was old age. She was a widow, age given as 75 years and 1 day - birthdate as 16 Aug 1831. Burial was in Pinconning. Informant was John Jsic (Isaac?)


Son Samuel died 10 Aug 1907 in Pinconning township. His birth was given as 1 Nov 1882, age age 25 years, 7 months, 9 days. His parents were Joacb Chibness and Mary Jacobson, occupation farmer. Cause of death was consumption, burial in Pinconning. Informant was John Isaac.


Granddaughter Ethel B. Andrews, daughter of James Andrews and Jennie Chibness,  died 26 Nov 1907, at 1 year 9 months 2 days. Cause was diabetes, burial in Pinconning. 




Granddaughter Gladys Shawbose was said to be born 28 Sep 1908 (from her death certificate, age 17 at marriage in 1925).

All say they are full Chippewa, James says he graduated from the Mt. Pleasant school.


Daughter Louise was married to Harry Shawbush/Shawboose - prior to April 1911, exact date unknown. Both photos below are said to be Louise and Harry, however the man is not the same. Is one Louise with a different husband? 



Jacob died 3 Apr 1911 in Pinconning township. He was married, a farmer, born 9 Apr 1856, son of James Chibness and unknown. Cause of death was tuberculosis, burial in Pinconning. Informant was Louise Shawbush.

On 9 Feb 1924, daughter Louise Shawbush, nee Chibness, 36 of Pinconning, born Pinconnig, daughter of Jacob Chibness and Mary Jacob, married once before, applied to marry Edward A. Ashman, 26, of Detroit, born Pinconning, chauffer, son of Tecumsah and Mary Peters, his first marriage. The marriage part was not filled out. 

On 22 Sep 1925 in Bay City, Jacob's granddaughter, Gladys Shawbush, 17, born and of Pinconning, daughter of Harry [Shawbush] and Louise Chibness, with mother's consent, married Aaron Sawmick, 26, born and of Pinconning, laborer, son of John [Sawmick] and Susan Ashman. P.M. Haller, Justice performed the ceremony. Witnesses were Harry Peters and Louise Shawbush. 


Granddaughter Gladys Shawbose Sawmick died 20 Jan 1927. Her birth was given as 28 Sep 1908, age 18 years, 3 months, 22 days. Cause of death was post partum hemorrage. Informant was Louise Shabush. Burial was in Pinconning. 


Wife Mary died 14 Dec 1929 in Pinconning. Her birth was given as 1846, age as 83 years. Father given as Jacob Jacobs, mother unknown.  Cause of death was acute nephritis. Burial in Pinconning. Informant was daughter Louise Chibness.

Daughter Louise, 44, married once before, born Bay county, daughter of Jacob Kechebness and Mary Jacobs, married Amos Gould, 24,  born in Elk Rapids, son of Augustus Gould and Hattie Ance. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Albert Stratz, pastor, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, on 26 Feb 1935. [Note Amos was actually said to be born in 1899; the typed marriage date was 1935, but the date at the top is 1933.]


Daughter Jennie, 45, married once before, born Bay county, daughter of Jacob Chibneys and Mary Jacobs, married Jack Williams, 39, born in Standish, son of Henry Williams and Mary Greenski. Ceremony was performed by J. W. LeVan, Minister, on 18 Nov 1939 in Standish, Arenac, Michigan.


Daughter Jennie Williams, died 13 Dec 1948. Her birth is given as 14 Jun 1890, father as Jacob Chibness, mother as unknown. Cause of death was cancer of stomach, burial in Oak Ridge cemetery in Bay City. Informant was her husband Jacob Williams.

Daughter Louise Gould died 30 Dec 1948 in Bay City. Her father was given as Jacob Chibnass, mother unknown. Cause of death was exhaustion due to ...tuberculosis or ...of colon. Burial was in Pinconning, informant was granddaughter Dorthy Sawmick.
