Antoine Shawwawnonquot / Shananaquet.


Antoine/Shaw waw naw naw quot was said to be born in 1821. 

Antoine married Sophia Josephine Sangobey, daughter of John Sangobey and Mary Kewaymoka. Sophia was most likely born in 1832 (age 28 in the 1860 census.)

Daughter Mary was said to be born about 1844

Son Francis was said to be born about 1847

There's an additional child born before 1849.

Daughter Susan, 20, was married on 26 Aug 1882 in Indian River to Joseph Parkey, 19. Ceremony was performed by John Carter, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were Mathew and Eliza Shananaquet of Indian Village.





On 6 Feb 1893, daughter Eliza, 30, born Burt Lake, married once before, married William Hamlin, 27, born Burt Lake, son of M. F. Hamlin and Theresa Wayding, in Harbor Springs, Emmet county, Michigan. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Benno Tooka, Catholic Priest. Witnesses were Alex and Mrs. A. Gijigobe of Harbor Springs.


Son Frank, 50, was married on 15 Feb 1900 in Indian Village to Katherine Motwas, 30, daughter of Joe Motwa and Mary Kewan. He was married twice before, she was married once before. Ceremony was performed by M. F. Hamlin, justice of the peace. Abel Shananaquet and Eliza Shananaquet of Indian Village were the witnesses.

On 15 Oct 1900 local banker John "McGinn, accompanied by then-sheriff Fred Ming and his deputies, roused the band's 19 families from their cabins with just a few posssessions, each, doused everything in kerosene--including most of their furniture and their food stores for the upcoming winter--and set it all on fire." Chronicling the 1900 Burt Lake Burnout.

"Following the October 'Burn-Out' by McGinn, many of the families moved in with Burt Lake Band members who lived close by on Indian Trail road, just north of Indian Village. Others took up residence further west in Middle or Cross village. As time progressed,d the Burn-Out familes built new homes on the land owned by the Massey and Nongueskwa families along Indian Trail (today it is Indian Road.) Antoine died 30 May 1912. His age was given as 98, parents unknown, occupation as farmer. Cause of death was inflammation of the bladder. Burial in Burt Lake. [He was listed as 89 only 2 years earlier]




Sophia died 26 Jun 1914. Her birth was given as 10 Apr 1810, age as 104 years, 2 months, 27 days. Her parents were John Senogoby and Mary Kewaymoka. Cause of death was senility, burial in Burt township. [Sophia was listed as 88 only 4 years earlier, which is closer to her real age.]


Son Francis died 21 Nov 1919 in Cross Village, Emmet, Michigan. His age was given as 72, father as Anton Schanangad, mother unknown. Cause was cirrhosis of the liver. Burial was not given. 


Son Isaac died 15 Feb 1921in East Jordan, Charlevoix, Michigan. His birth was given as 22 Mar 1850, age as 70 years, 10 months, 23 days. His widow was named Elizabeth, father Antoine, mother unknown. Cause of death was medeast...el abcess probably tubercular following injury, feel from trainway. Burial at the Catholic Cemetery.


Daughter Susan died 1 Oct 1926 in Burt, Cheboygan, Michigan. Her birth was given as 15 Aug 1858, age 68 years, 1 month, X days. Occupations were farmer's wife and basket weaver. Parents were Antoine Shenanquet and Sopha Senigoby. Cause of death was cirrhosis of liver, burial in Burt.


Daughter Elizabeth died 5 Aug 1950 and was buried at St. Mary's Indian Cemetery #2




Daughter Eliza died 8 Dec 1951 and was buried at St. Mary's Indian Cemetery #2
