James Crampton 1889-1948

James Crampton was born 28 Mar 1889 in Custer, Mason, Michigan. He was the son of Foster Crampton and Angeline Moby. James joined older sister Lydia who was said to be born in Feb 1887.

Brother Willie was born 7 Feb 1903. Sadly he died 9 Feb 1904 in Eden, Mason, Michigan. Cause of death was fits, burial in cemetery #2 in Eden township.


Uncle Frank died 16 Aug 1904 in Crystal Valley, Oceana, Michigan. His date of birth was given as 5 Jul 1875, yet age was given as 29 years, 1 month, 1 day. Cause of death was blood poisoning resulting from fracture. Burial was in Crystal Valley.

Grandfather John Crampton died 31 Jan 1912 in Homestead township, Benzie, Michigan. His age was given as 82, married, occupation wood chopper. Cause of death was probably heart disease of some kind - he fell dead in the road. Burial was in Homestead.





Sister Lydia, 24, was married 19 Aug 1912 in Ludington, Mason, Michigan to George Lahaye, 29, son of Ephraim Lahaye and Mary Robinson. Ceremony was performed by Henry C. Ransom, Judge of Probate. Witnesses were Lottie and Peter Allard.


Brother Thomas was sent to Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Board School, parent Foster Crampton of Custer Michigan, Route #2. He was listed as 3/4 Ottawa, age 16, admitted 1 Sep 1913. 



Mother Angeline Moby Crampton died 14 Apr 1914. Her birth was given as 11 Dec 1867, father as Joe Moby. Cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery in Eden, undertaker James Crampton of Custer.


Sister Lena died 9 Jun 1914 in Eden, Mason, Michigan. Her birth was given as 14 Mar 1910. Parents as Foster Crampton and Angeline Moby. Cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis, burial in South Eden cemetery. Informant was Foster Crampton, undertaker James Crampton.

Sister Eliza, 19,  was married 29 Jul 1914 in Fern, Mason, Michigan to Jerome Memberto, 24, son of George Memberto and Mary Schagwabano. Ceremony was performed by F. E. Stewart, Clergyman. Witnesses were Roy Rosse and Lila Mc Clain of Fountain.


James, 25,  was married on 23 Jan 1915 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse, Michigan to Lucy Wabsis, 18, daughter of William Wabsie and Mary Stone. Ceremony was performed by Fred R. Walker, Judge of Probate. Witnesses were Edward A. Monroe and Singe Pederson of Traverse City. 



Sister Lydia died 22 May 1915 in Eden, Mason, Michigan. Her age was given as 27, born 1882. She was listed as single and at home. Cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis. Burial was in South Eden Cemetery.


Aunt Anna Webb died 16 Nov 1916 on North Manitou Island, Leelanau, Michigan. Her birth was given as 20 Oct 1881, parents as John Crampton and Elizabeth Bailey. Cause of death was child birth, burial on North Manitou Island.

Son Alfred/Albert/Clyde was born 7 Jan 1921. [1922 on Alfred's WWII draft registration]. He was called Alfred on the Mt. Pleasant School pupil registers and his parents divorce papers, Elbert on the 1930 census, Clyde on his social security registration, and brother John's obit. 


Father Foster died 15 May 1921 in Eden, Mason, Michigan. His age was given as about 70, birth place as Bradley, Michigan, father as John Crampton, mother unknown. Cause of death was organic heart disease, burial as South Eden cemetery.


Sister Eliza, 23, was married on 17 Oct 1921 in Pellston, Emmet, Michigan to Samuel Shananaquet, 24, son of Johnas Shananquet and Susan Negake. Marked as first marriage for both. Ceremony was performed by Raplh S. Jordan, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were Chas. and Mary Martell of Cheboygan.

Son Foster was born 1924

Daughter Angeline was born 5 Aug 1925.

On 8 Apr 1926 Lucy filed for divorce. Children  listed as Clara, 10; Lena, 8; John, 7; Alfred, 5; Foster, 2; and Angeline, 7 months.








Daughter Angeline died 6 Jun 1926. Her birth was given as 5 Aug 1925, age as 10 months, 1 day. Cause of death was pneumonia, burial in Scottville, Michigan.


Daughter Lydia was born 25 Aug 1926 in Muskegon, Muskegon, Michigan. Sadly she died 31 Aug 1926. Cause of death was tear of ? (birth injury). Burial was in Scottville.


On 4 Sep 1926, son John, age 7, daughter Lena, age 7, and daughter Clara, age 10, were admitted to Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School. John and Lena were listed as 3/4 Ottawa, while Clara was listed as full Ottawa. Address of the children was Muskegon. 





Son Eugene Baba was born 8 Oct 1927 in Muskegon, Muskegon, Michigan. Sadly he died 19 Oct 1927. Cause of death was alimentary intoxication. Burial was Eaton township [Eden], Mason county.


On 28 Nov 1927 Lucy's case against James was dismissed. 




Son Max was born 16 Nov 1928

1928-1929 Mt. Pleasant Register of Pupils lists daughters Clara, 13, and Lena, 11, as students. Clara was listed as full Ottawa while Lena was 3/4. Sons are Alfred, 8, 3/4 Ottawa, John, 9, 3/4 Ottawa. Parent was listed as Lucy Crampton of Muskegon.





Brother Tom, 30,  was married to Mrs. Lizzie Crampton, 25, daughter of Louie Carey and Nancy Compo on 23 Jun 1928. Ceremony was performed by Ruth Thompson, Judge of Probate. Witnesses were Fred Peters and Mary Walker of Muskegon.

Register of Pupils at Mount Pleasant Indian School 1929-30, listed Alfred Crampton, age 7 and John Crampton, age 10, both 3/4 Ottawa, as sons of Jim Crampton of Muskegon, while John A., age 16, 1/2 Ottawa, was son of Lucy Crampton. Alfred had been admitted on 2 Sep 1927, John on 4 Sep 1926 and John A. on 7 Sep 1928. Clara, age 14, full Ottawa and Lena, 11, 3/4 Ottawa were the daughters of Lucy Crampton of Muskegon. The girls had been admitted on 4 Sep 1925.

On 5 Oct 1929, James filed for divorce from Lucy. He was asking for custody of the children: Clara, 14; Leana, 12; John, 9; Alfred, 8; Foster, 7; and William, 9 months. [This would be Max who was born 16 Jan 1928]

Brother Louis died 11 Mar 1940 in Troy, Newaygo, Michigan. His age was given as 46, birth as September - rest unknown. Cause of death was Valvular Lesions of heart. Died in small camp. Helping his brother cutting bolts, north of Troy Hill. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Muskegon. Information was sister Eliza Dumashall.

On 16 Oct 1940 son John registered for the draft. He gave his name as John Paul Crampton, birth as 3 Apr 1919 in Custer. Employer as Harry H. Philo of Hesperia, Oceana, Michigan. John was described as 5' 10", 140 lbs, with black hair, brown eyes and ruddy complexion.



On 30 Jun 1942, Alfred registered for the draft. He gave his birth as 7 Jan 1922 in Mancelona, address of person who will always know your address as Mrs. Phillip Carroll, Kalamazoo [sister Clara], employer as student Western Michigan College. Alfred was described as 5' 8", 139 pounds, brown eyes, brown hair, dark brown complexion.



James died 20 Oct 1948 in Muskegon, Muskegon, Michigan. Date of birth was given as 28 Mar 1889, wife given as Lucy Wabsie, 48. James occupation was cement mixer for the Bud Griffin Construction Co. Cause of death was dissecting Aortic Aneurism, burial at Oakwood cemetery in Muskegon. Informant was Martha Platt.
