Edward Naska/Naskaw

Naw-scow, later called Edward Naskaw, was said to be born in Muskegon in 1826, the son of Mole Naska and Moununokakway. 

Edward was married at least three times.

Daughter Sarah was said to be born in 1844 [age 63 in 1907, daughter of Edward and Peneswa]

Daughter Mary was said to be born in 1845 [age 15 on 1860 census]

Nos cah, was baptised 25 Jun 1847 by Rev. Peter Doughtery at Old Mission and given the name Edward. On the same day, Nos cah had one child baptisted, named Charlott. [This is the only mention of this child.]

Son Peter was said to be born in 1853 [age 7 on 1860 census, this is the only mention of this child]

On 16 Mar 1860 in Bear Creek, Emmet County, Sarah Naska, age 15,  married John Blackbird, age 22.

Daughter Mary #2 was said to be born in 1862 [Age 8 on 1870 census]

Daughter Noequagegog was said to be born in 1864 [Age 6 on 1870 census]

Between 1860 and 1870 Edward had married Wabanquett. [This is Anna Sogod]

Daughter Sarah was said to be born in 1863 [Age 50 on her marriage in 1913, which names Anna as her mother]

28 May 1866 - Edward Naskwa sold land to Aw saw naw qua for $300.


Daughter Susan was said to be born in 1868 [Age 12 on 1880 census, only mention of this child; could she be Sarah?]

Missing are the two children from the 1860 census - Mary would be 25, Peter would be 17. It is later shown that Angus is Anna's child but not Edward's.

Daughter Eliza was born 23 Jul 1871 to Nos-kaw and Wa-ban-a-quet. [This is the only mention of this child]


Son Elijah Noska was born 10 May 1873 to Edward and Jane

Daughter Jane/Jennie was born 2 Nov 1875 in Kewadin [from her obituary]

Son Benjamin was born 30 Oct 1877 in Milton, Antrim, Michigan. Parents are given as Edward Noska and Annie Noska. [Only mention of this child]

Missing was Jane, who would be age 5.

On 11 Oct 1880, Wah- bon-quette-o-quay, alias Anna Morning Cloud Naskaw, wife of Edward, sold 10 acres of land for $100 to Stephen Nay-zay-do-ching. 


Daughter Jane attended Carlisle Indian Industrial Boarding School, arriving there 25 Oct 1890.


While at Carlisle, daughter Jane was sent "to the country" on 26 Jun 1891 where she worked for C. Bisbing in Merchantville, New Jersey. She returned to school on 8 Mar 1892, and was discharged from school on 5 Jul 1893.



Daughter Jane, 22, born Kewadin, daughter of Edward Maska and Annie So Good, was married to John White, 27, born Wisconsin, laborer, son of Lewis White and Adeline Bernard, on 29 Sep 1897 in Kewadin. Ceremony was performed by Rev. John Jacksobs, Minister of the M.E. Church, witnesses were Isaac and Mary Naska of Kewadin.


From the Elk Rapids Progress - 16 Aug 1888 "An Indian by the name of Tom Noscow was lodged in the city mansion Monday for drunkenness."


22 Oct 1892, Elijah Noskah, 21, applied for a license to marry Eliza J. Wabska, 16. No marriage took place.




Angus Henry, born Canada, son of ____ Henry and  Anna So-god married Mary Norta, 27, born Cross Village, daughter of _____Norta on 24 Feb 1894. Ceremony was performed by S. P. Hewett, minister of the gospel. Witnesses were James Wasgesic and Salma M. Hewett

Son Elijah, 23, laborer, son of Edward and Angeline Naskaw, married Maggie Peshawba, 18, housekeeper, daughter of Grbriel Peshawa and unknown on 5 Aug 1895 in Peshawbatown. Ceremony was performed by Bruno Torka, priest.

20 Jun 1899, Anna Nascow, age 58, died in Elk Rapids, daughter of John Gebo? She was married, the mother of 13 children, 5 children living. Cause of death listed as had no physician. Informant was Mary White.

On 20 May 1901, Edward, 75, born Old Mission, son of  Mole Noska and Nownumokokway, married Mary Mewahpekons, 38, born Mulletts Lake, daughter of Pewahpackons and Anna, in Elk Rapids. It was her first marriage and his third. Ceremony was performed by J. W. Hart, Minister of the Gospel.




18 Apr 1904 Isaac Naska, 24, of Kewadin, son of Edward Noska and Anna Chebs, married Loser Chinkwa, 29, of Petoskey. Ceremony performed by J.S. Kewaygeshik in Alden.





Daughter Sarah Philips died 7 Apr 1907 in Kalkaska county. Her age was given as 63. She was widowed, married first at 18, parent of 4 children, of whom 2 are living. Sarah was born at Old Misson, father Edward Naska born in Muskekgon, mother Peneswa born in Michigan. Her occupation was basket weaver. Cause of death was old age, with exposure and alcoholic intoxication as contributory factors. Informant was Eliga Naska, burial was in Kewadin. [This Sarah was not mentioned on the Durant Roll]

Edward died 27 Sep 1911. His age was unknown, as near as relatives can tell he was 105. He was born in Michigan, parents unknown. Cause of death, "was called in to see Edward Naska, Examined him, make --- change to --- no date. Found him --- --- hopefully so. Old age was a contributory factor. Burial was in Kwadin. Information was Jane White.

On 27 Mar 1913 in Gills Pier, Leelanau, Michigan, daughter Sarah Naska, 50, daughter of Edward Noska and Ann Chabo, married George Pabo, 52,  son of George Pabo and Mary Ann Prickett. It was the first marriage for both. Ceremony was performed by L.L. Steadman, M.E. Minister, witnesses were Joe Lightsky and Jim Wanagegek.


On 13 Oct 1918, daughter Sarah Aikens died in Hayes, Charlevoix, Michigan. She was married, born 1866, daughter of Edward Naska and unknown. Cause of death was tuberclasotn? of 2 years standing. Burial was in Greenwood, information Mrs. Jennie White of Bayshore.


Son Isaac, 46, born in Kewadin, son of Edward Naska and Anna Sogott, was married 13 Mar 1927 in Petoskey to Rosie McSawby, 38, daughter of Lou Shanknakashe and Elizabeth Naonnshik(?). It was a second marriage for both. Ceremony was performed by Rev. C. J. Kruse, Minister First Methodist Episcopal Church. Witnesses were John White and Mrs. John White of Petoskey. 


Daughter Jane/Jennie died 10 Mar 1949 in Petoskey
