Susan Misconaquot

Susan was said to be born in 1828, the daughter of Louis Ne-saw-waw-quot. Records also used Josette and Josephina as her first name. Misconaquot was used as her surname.

Sister Ke-che-ga-me-quay [Charlotte] was said to be born 15 Jun 1836. [From her death record]

Sister O-tish-quay-ke-zhick-go-quay [Mary] was said to be born in 1850 [From her marriage record]


Son Joseph was said to be born in 1851 [1860 census]

Susan married Louis Miskoguon, the son of Michael Miskoguon and Sophia, on 1 May 1853 at Northport, Leelanau, Michigan. Ceremony was performed by Re. George Smith. Louis also used the names Awkebemosay and Kewaygoshkum. [Date from pension records]

Son Mitchell was said to be born in 1854 [1860 census]

On 10 Sep 1863, Louis enlisted in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters at Little Traverse.

At home, Susan was unaware that Louis had been captured on 17 Jun 1864 at Petersburg, VA. He was sent to the confederate prison at Andersonville, GA. Once paroled Louis was on the ill-fated steamer Sultana when the ship exploded on 27 Apr 1865. Surviving the explosion he was discharged 19 Jul 1865, mustered out and returned to Michigan on 28 Jul 1865.

Louis was said to have died 5 Jul 1870 in Burgess, Charlevoix

Sister O-tish-quay-ke-zhick-go-quay, 22,  married Joseph Buckwheat, 30, on 21 Aug 1872 in Arenac. Ceremony was performed by D. Decker, Minister of the Gospel.




After Louis' death Susan lived with Simon Sanequaby/Singoby. Simon had also served in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters. Although never legally married Susan and Simon had two children.

Son James was said to be born in 1873

Daughter Margaretta was born in Aug 1875. She was baptised at Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Harbor Springs on 22 Feb 1876 and died 4 days later on 26 Feb 1876.

Although James was not mentioned in Simon's records, Margaretta was. 


1876 - Louis received patent to the allotment land.

Louis' estate was entered into probate court in 1882 thru 1885, so Susan and the children could sell the land. Probate records

Widow's pension - 1889








Susan's family paid property taxes in 1894 on 40 acres of the 80 acres Louis had in section 11, T34 North, R7 West / Hayes township, Charlevoix, Michigan




Son James Singobi, 22, son of Simon Singobi and Susan Mis co gun, was married on 8 Aug 1895 in Bay Shore, Emmet, Michigan to Alice Waukazoo, 18, daughter of Joe Wakazoo. Ceremony was performed by Bruno Torka, priest. Witnesses were Joseph Kewashkum and Agnes Odonick.




Son Moses died 24 Dec 1899 in Petoskey. He was 38, married, father of 3 children, son of Kewagoshgum and Susan Sochaguat. Cause of death was accidental being run over by rail road. Burial was in Carpender

Son John, 24, son of Louis Kewagoshkum and Susan Soiquit, was married to Minnie Collins, 19, parents not given, on 7 Nov 1892 in Hayes township, Charlevoix, Michigan. Ceremony was performed by N. B. Sayer, Justice of the Peace.





Son Frank, 22, married Anna Tobasash, 19, daughter of Joseph Tobasash and Sarah Shawangoihe, on 23 Feb 1895 in Charlevoix. Ceremony was performed by Ezra F. Meech, Justice of the Peace.



1900 Federal Census - not yet found


Son John died 23 Apr 1907 at the hospital in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan. His age was given as 42, single, laborer, parents unknown. Cause of death was apoplexy, burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Sister Charlotte Williams died 23 Oct 1909 in Standish, Arenac, Michigan. Her birth was given as 15 Jun 1836, father as Lewis Suxwahgrut. Cause of death was a sever cough for several months. Burial as at the Indian Cemetery in Saganing. Informant was David Williams [her husband]

Son Frank died 14 Mar 1918 in Wilmont township, Cheboygan, Michigan. He was married, age 49, occupation wood chopper, birthplace Bay Shore, Michigan, father J. Kewagoshkum, mother unknown. Cause of death was accidental death struck by train, burial in Boyne Falls. Informant was Margaret Kewagoshkum of Bay Shore.



Susan died 16 May 1919 in Wolverine, Cheboygan. She was the widow of Louis Miscogeon, age about 100 years old, daughter of Louis Miswalket. Cause of death was found dead in bed, senile, heart and other changes, cardiac insufficiency. Burial was in Wolverine.
