James Alberts

James Jesse Alberts was born 6 Jan 1883, the son of Richard Alberts and Mary. On the 1900 census he is a 17 year old day laborer



The Durant roll field notes 37/52 list James as 25, unmarried, residing in Freesoil.


On 30 May 1909 in Freesoil, James married Lucy Bailey, daughter of Peter Bailey and Abigail Generau. In 1910 the couple is living in the home of Amos Waukazoo, James is 27, a laborer in the lumber woods. Lucy is 17. They speak English, have been married one year and have no children.

Sadly Lucy died on 13 Feb 1911. On 26 Feb 1916 in Rapid City James married Rose Nadagwesa, daughter of Simon and Mary.



The couple celebrates Christmas with the birth of their son Selvester. Unfortunately baby dies 5 Jun 1917 in Antrim county. James is living in Alba at the time, but buried his son in Peshawbestown.



James registers for the draft in September of 1918. He is 35 years old and living in Omena, Leelanau county.



 Son John died 19 Nov 1924 in Cross Village, Emmet county. Death certificate says John was born in 1918 in Suttons Bay, Leelanau county.


James is again a widower and living in Muskegon in 1930. He is 47 and a mason tender. A mason tender climbs up the scaffolding to chip off any excess grout on the bricks after the mason is done. James works for the Couster (?) Company.


James registered for the draft for World War II on 27 Apr 1942. He is now living in Baldwin, Lake county. It is not currently known who the Marie is who will always know James' address.



Society Security has James dying in May 1966. His last residence was in Hart, Oceana county.

  1. I believe Marie was his illegitimate child, as we've looked into my grandpas history his mothers name was Marie; her father we only knew as James the same as my grandpas middle name. Michael James Alberts, Little river tribe.

  2. My husband's grandmother is named Marie Alberts and her son, my husband's father, was Michael James Alberts. Time frame fits well for Marie to be James' daughter. Also, my husband said his grandmother had a family member as Ogema of the Grand Traverse Band.
