Mary Alberts Skimhorn Thomas

Mary Alberts was born in April 1881 according to the 1900 census. She is the daughter of Richard Alberts and Mary, living in Freesoil, Mason county.

Mary becomes wife of Edward Skimhorn, son of Charles and Key-way-ah-ge-wan. Field note 37-52 (Mary's parents) show Mary and Edward as having three children - Chas., 5, Lydia, 3, and Naw-qua-ge-zhick, born Jan. 1908.

Field note 3-49 (Edward's parents) show the children as Chas., 5, Lydia, 3, and Isaac born 27 Dec 1907.

Unfortunately Edward dies prior May of 1910. Also passed is daughter Lydia. She is possibly Leddie Skimhorn 1905-1910 buried in Maple Grove cemetery in Freesoil. Why she would have a stone and not her father is unknown.

In the 1910 census Mary is living with her parents and brothers. She has three children, Charlie, 7, Isaac, 2 and Amy, one month.

Baby Amy/Emma who was born 20 Mar 1910, passed 11 May 1911 of TB. She is buried in the Freesoil Cemetery. Emma also does not have a tombstone.

By the 1920 census Mary is married to Moses Thomas and living in Freesoil. Family consists of Mooses (Moses), 30, Mary, 39, Charles Skimhorn, 16, stepson, Isic Skimhorn, 12, stepson, Mooses Jr., 6, Louis, 4.

Son Isaac is on the census twice, having also been enumerated at Holy Childhood School in Harbor Springs, Emmet county.

1930 census of Freesoil shows Mose Thomas, 40, married at 23, rents, laborer at odd jobs, wife Mary, 48, married at 31, son Louis, 14 and daughter Clara, 8. All are listed as full Ottawa.

Isaac is a 22 year old laborer, living in Waterford Township, Racine county, Wisconsin.

In 1933 tragedy struck. Mary's son Charles Skimhorn and nephew Frank Peters (son of sister Eliza) were drowned in Pentwater Lake. The Ludington Daily News of 20 Jan 1933 tells of the boys being missing (pages 1 and 6) with the news of their bodies being found added to page one by the paper.

From the Ludington Daily News of 24 Jan 1933

Have not found Mary in the 1940 census nor any info on Louis and Clara Thomas.

Isaac married Ethel Janice Parks on 17 Jun 1944 in Savanna, Carroll county, Illinois. They were the parents of Linda (1944-2010), James (1945-1997), Adam (1948), Gerald Sr. (living) and Michael (living).

Isaac died 3 Nov 1981 in Lowell, Kent county, Michigan.
