Theresa Roundsky Anderson Wesley

John Robinson, age 25, born Michigan, residing in Charlevoix, married Madeline Pamesawah, age 16, born Michigan, residing in Charlevoix, on 27 Sep 1880 in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan. This is the only record found for them.

Two years later the couples' only daughter, Theresa was born, 25 Oct 1882 in Petoskey (from her first social security number application and first marriage record), Horton's Bay (from her second social security number application) or Charlevoix (from her second marriage record).

School listings show Theresa attending Mt. Pleasant School arriving on 5 Jun 1894 with her grandparents Moses and Sophia being her guardians. Her parents are listed as living in 1894 and 1895.

She uses the surname Pemsa or Pempsa from 1894 to 1898. In 1899 her name changes to Theresa Roundsky, but Sophia is still her guardian. Her parents are now listed as deceased. She is listed as Ottawa in 1899 and Chippewa in 1900.

The 1900 census shows her as a student in June, while school records show Theresa left school on 18 Jul 1900.

Love at first sight? Less then a month after leaving school, on 12 Aug 1900 in Petoskey, Theresa married Edward Anderson. They were married by William Petoskey, minister, church unknown. Unfortunately the only parent mentioned in the records is Edward's father Jacob. Only two months earlier (2 Jun 1900) Edward had taken out a marriage license to marry Jane Mark, daughter of Peter Mark and Anna, but the couple never married. On that record Edward also gave Jacob as his father and unknown as his mother.

The durant roll field notes page 14-58 shows Edward, age 32, Theresa, 26 and four children, Eddie, 8; Lucy, 6; Thomas, 5; and Lizzie born 28 Sep 1907. It also says Theresa is the granddaughter of 6-44. Edward's father Jacob claims his first wife and Edward's mother was Sarah Aiken, deceased.

Page 6-44 is Waw-be-win-de-go, deceased, wife deceased, and only the location Charlevoix written under child. This is John Robinson's father based on the info on page 8-30.

Page 8-30 is Moses Pay-me-saw-aw, age 64 living in Petoskey, wife Mary Sophia died in Sep 1907. Their child is deceased, child's husband is dead, and their grandchild is Theresa Anderson, wife of Ed Anderson (page 14-58).

Moses was the son of 3-30 Pay-me-saw-aw. (Other records call Pay-me-saw-aw Michel and his wife Mary, they would be Theresa's great-grandparents.

The 1910 census of Elk Rapids says Edward is a general laborer, 3/4 Ottawa, Theresa is full Ottawa and had given birth to 5 children, all living. The entire family is listed as speaking English except Percy who is a baby.

In 1912 a sixth child, Howard, dies the day he is born in Elk Rapids. Mother is listed as (Tresa Robinson born Michigan.)

Irene is born in 1913 in Elk Rapids, but by 1915 Edward and Theresa are living in Manistee county when they enroll Eddie, Lucy and Thomas in Mt. Pleasant School.

Letter written for Theresa and sent to Mt. Pleasant School explaining which Christmas presents go to which child.

In September 1918 Edward registers for the World War I draft in Walton, Grand Traverse county. He explains that he doesn't know his exact birth date but he "went to orphans home at Lansing 1889 then 12 years old." His nearest relative is Tressa living in Brethern and Edward does common labor for Burt Babcock in Walton.

Son Arthur "Alexander", age one month, dies on 3 Nov 1918 of influenza. This is during the flu epidemic and doctor states that while he didn't treat the child while living the other members of the family are suffering from influenza. Baby is buried in Dickson township. While it is heart breaking for any mother to lose a child, it's even sadder that Arthur was buried alone, so far from the rest of the family. Mother is listed as Theresa Ronski born Sholvay Co. (Charlevoix?)

1920 census has Edward and Theresa in Manistee county with children Edward, 18, Lucy, 16, Thomas, 14,  Elizabeth, 12, Percy, 10, Irene, 7 and Mary, 3. Edward's occupation is trapper. Also on the page is Edward's uncle Peter Anderson. Both Edward and Peter say they own their homes.

The family moves back to Elk Rapids as Ida Mae is born there a few months after the census. Elizabeth dies 6 Nov 1921 in Elk Rapids of TB. Mother is Tressa Roundsky born Hortons Bay.

Bert's death certificate states he was born in Walton Junction, 4 Sep 1922 and died in Elk Rapids, 13 May 1923. Again mother is Teressa Roundsky born Hortons Bay.

In 1930 the family consists of Edward and Theresa, Edward Jr. (married), Percy, Irene, Mary, Ida M. and Dorothy (daughter-in-law). The family is mixed blood Ottawa. Edward is now unemployed, (While not stated on the census later records show it's due to illness.) Theresa does laundry for private families, Edward Jr. is a laborer for the power company and Percy is a laborer on the highway. The family owns their house valued at $75 which is not a farm, does not own a radio nor is Edward a veteran.

In 1930 Mary is attending Mt. Pleasant.

The following picture was taken about 1932. Women are Alice John and Theresa Anderson, men behind them are Jonas Shawandase and James Cobb. It was taken with a church group.

In 1933 Theresa lost a fifth child when Thomas died on the 24th of Dec of a skull fracture after being struck by an auto. Mother is listed as Theresa Roundsky born Emmet County.

Report of school social worker in 1935.

In 1936 daughter Mary Eliza (Mrs. James Williams) died of TB at age 20. Mother is Theresa Roundsky born Bay Shore.

Sadly after almost 40 years of marriage, Edward dies in February of 1940.

He had been  ill the past 15 years and in bed the past two years.

He was born in Scottville and had lived in this village the last 45 years.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Indian Mission Church at Kewadin with Rev. J.C. Matthews of East Jordan officiating. Burial took place in the churchyard cemetery."

The 1940 census shows Theresa with daughter Irene Koon (Irene is listed as married but no mention of where her husband, Edwin, is residing.) Theresa is listed as a laborer, doing general housework and made $200 that year. Nearby are sons Edward and Percy and daughter Lucy with their spouses and a total of 16 children. Daughter Ida Mae is still in the Michigan State Sanitarium for TB (was admitted prior to Dec 1938), while her husband Harry John is living in Northport with his brother Percy. Missing are Thomas' widow Delia and their two sons.

On 1 Aug 1942 in Alden, Theresa, (59, born Charlevoix, daughter of John Robinson and Madeline Pamesawah) married widower Frank Wesley, (58, born Manistee, son of John Wesley and Mary Bailey).

Life struck another blow when daughter Irene died 9 Sep 1950.

Theresa died on 25 Jan 1955 and was buried in the Kewadin church cemetery with her family.

Elk Rapids Progress, 3 Feb. 1955

"Theresa Anderson Passes Away"

"Funeral services for Mrs. Theresa Anderson Wesley, 72, who died January 25 was held Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Rev. Alexander read the service and burial was made in the family lot in the church yard cemetery.

She was a faithful worker in the Kewadin Indian church and was well known throughout the county. She had resided here 55 years.

Surviving are four children, Mrs. Lucille Kenoshmag of Yuba, Mrs. Ida Mae John of Kewadin, Edward and Percy of Elk Rapids."

Theresa lived thru boarding school, the loss of her parents in her teens, sending four of her children to boarding school, the influenza epidemic (which struck the entire family and took the then youngest child), World War I, the depression, the illness and eventual loss of her husband, necessitating her supporting the family, World War II, remarriage and the Korean War. Seven of her eleven children predeceased her - four as infants.

While her life wasn't always easy, she left behind people who love her and honor her memory. Today her descendants number over 500 (and counting).
