Joseph Ance 1869-1904

Joseph Ance was born 2 Mar 1869 in Leelanau county, Michigan, the son of Peter Ance and Mary Windigowish.



Joseph's father, Peter, became a part of Simon Kay quay to say's band, after moving to Leelanau county in the early 1850s.

"In 1836 the Platte River Band under Chief Kay quay to say was located in Benzie County, Township T26N R14W sections 8 and 17. It was a small band in 1836 with a population of eight individuals. By 1855, the population had increased to 225. Sometime in the 1840s this band moved to Leelanau County and purchased lands in township 10 north, range 11 west (Suttons Bay township). Their village site was at present day Peshawbestown."

"Kay quay to say remained chief of this band until 1866 when he was replaced by Nay waw day ke zhick. Nay waw day ke zhick continued as chief into the 1870s. Kay quay to say's Band took the majority of their allotments near the lands they purchased in Suttons Bay Township." Joseph's parents Peter and Mary were married 11 Nov 1857 in Peshawbestown.

1858 Annuity Roll #41 - Anse, 1 man, 1 woman, no children, received $8.45, under Chief Kay quay to say.

Joseph's oldest brother, Simon, was born 8 Nov 1858.

1861 Annuity Roll #35 Anse, 1 man, 1 woman, 1 child received $13.86 under Chief Kay quay to say.

Parents Peter and Mary then had son Peter born 4 Jul 1861 and daughter Mary Ann 12 Jul 1862.

Father Peter registered for the Civil War draft - he was 26, farmer, married


1865 annuity roll #14, Peter Anse, 1 man, 1 woman, 2 children, received $16.00 under Chief Kay quay to say.

Peter and Mary had daughter Philomena 7 Nov 1865.

1868 annuity roll #8 Peter Anse, 1 man, 1 woman, 3 children, received $79.25, under Chief Nay-waw-day-ke-zhick

Since Joseph was born in 1869 one of the children counted above died before 1870.

1870 farm schedule gave a look at Peter's farm: 20 acres improved, 12 acres wooded, value of farm - $300, value of tools - $50, 3 horses, 6 swine, value of livestock - $170, 30 bushels of winter wheat, 20 bushes of indian corn, 60 bushels of oats.



Twin brothers Michael and Casper were born 1 Mar 1872. This is the only record of Casper. Michael is later called Mitchel.




28 Jun 1872 - Peter received the patent to his land.




Sister Madeline was said to be born 13 Mar 1875. [Birth record not yet found].

Brother Mitchell was married 4 Nov 1895 in Peshabestown to Julia Oliver. His occupation was given as farmer, her's as farmer's daughter.


Father Peter died 3 Feb 1899 in Leelanau county.

Joseph was buried in an unmarked grave at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery (now the St. Kateri cemetery) in Peshabestown.
