Amos John 1878-1954

Amos said he was born on 3 Aug 1873 (WWI draft) or 18 Sep 1878 (WWII draft) in Leelanau county, Michigan, the son of Sam John and Mary Sam or John Na-be-nea and Mary Sam (from his marriage records).



The 1880 Federal Census has not yet been found for this family.

Amos married Minnie Smith on 17 Jul 1900 in Burgess, Charlevoix county. He was 24, born Leelanau county, son of Sam John and Mary Sam. She was 18, born Hayes, Charlevoix county, the daughter of William and Marion Smith.  Both reside in Hayes, Amos' occupation was farmer, Minnie was a housewife. The ceremony was performed by Horase S. Newson, Justice of the Peace.



Daughter Mabel Willis was born 6 Nov 1900 in Charlevoix. Parents were Amos John, farmer, and Minnie John.


Wife Minnie died 24 Feb 1902 in Hayes, Charlevoix county. Her age of 19 years, 8 months, 14 days, sets her birth as 10 Jun 1882. Parents were listed as William Smith and Mary Appletree.


Amos married Alice Was-A-Quam on 5 Dec 1904 in Bay Shore, Charlevoix county. He was 29, resided in Horton Bay, the son of John Wa-be-nea and Mary Sam. She was 19, resided in Northport, parents not given. Minister W. A. Elias performed the ceremony. Lazrus and Lucy Willis were the witnesses.

Daughter Annie was  born 9 Apr 1908 in Homestead, Benzie county.



Daughter Annie died 10 Apr 1908 in Homestead, Benzie county. Place of burial was given as Northport.

Son Silas was said to be born 25 May 1909.  He died 2 Sep 1909 in Leelanau township.



Correspondence for the Durant Roll states Alice John is the daughter of #1 page 38 on the 1870 roll; her husband enrolled by authority of chiefs. [Unfortunately it doesn't give an 1870 number for his parents.]

The 1910 payroll for the Durant Roll shows Amos and Alice each received $21.16, plus $1.74 for baby Annie.

The 1910 Federal Census - Leelanau township, Leelanau county lists Amos and Alice living with her parents. Amos, age 30, born Michigan, occupation labor at farming; Alice, age 26, 5 children born, no children living.


The 1910 Federal Census - Hayes Township, Charlevoix county shows Amos' daughter Mable being raised by her grandmother and step-grandfather.

Daughter Elisa was said to be born 23 Jul 1910. She died 20 Jun 1911 in Leelanau township.


Daughter Mabel (mother Minnie Smith) died 24 Aug 1911, Hayes township, Charlevoix county of measles.


Daughter Mabel (mother Alice) was said to be born 1 Jun 1912 in Northport.

Son Percy was born 3 Mar 1915 (from draft registration)

Son Harry was born 3 Apr 1917 (from draft registration)

On 12 Sep 1918 Amos registered for the draft in Leelanau county. He gave his birth as 3 Aug 1873, occupation as laborer, nearest relative as wife Alice. Amos was described as medium height and weight, brown eyes, black hair.



Amos moved his family to a logging camp near Soo Junction, Luce county in the Upper Pensinsula. The families of Peter Sam, John Sheilding, Mary Chippeway, John Denemy and Jacob Deverny, neighbors in Leelanau county were also neighbor in Luce county.

Granddaughter Mabel was born 28 Apr 1938. Sadly she died 22 Dec 1938 in Traverse City, while her mama was in a sanitarium ill with TB.

On 1 Apr lived in Northport - lived on farm at home, here no.

On 15 Oct 1940 Percy registered for the draft.  He gave his birth as 3 Mar 1915 and was described as 5'8", 140 lbs, brown eyes, black hair, light brown complexion. Employer is Seth Garthe, Northport.





On 15 Oct 1940 Harry registered for the draft. He gave his birth as 3 Apr 1917 and was described as 5'8", 136 lbs, brown eyes, black hair, light brown complexion. Employer was Colin Munro of Williamsburg.




On 27 Apr 1942 Amos registered for the draft. He gave his birth as 18 Sep 1878. Employer was Seth Garthe. He was described as 5'7", brown eyes, black hair, dark brown complexion.

John Way-way-se-maw Westman c1815 - 1911

John Westman / Way-way-se-maw was said to be born in 1815 in Michigan.

John married Mary Ann. She was said to be born in 1825 in Michigan

Son Charles was said to be born in 1855 in Michigan.

Way-way-se-maw received the N 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of section 33, T30N, R12W, 8 Jan 1872. [Today this is in Leland township, Leelanau county]



The land is located west of Provement (now Lake Leelanau).



Daughter Louisa was said to be born in 1876.

After the 1880 census Charles married Margaret Nabinaga. Her daughter Christina, with John Wabinimkee, was born about 1878.

The 1881 Atlas of Leelanau shows the location of John Way-way-se-mah's (Westman) land.

Grandson John (son of Charles) was said to be born 1890.

John Joseph married Mary Jackson, the daughter of Peter Jackson and Maggie 7 Sep 1896 in Peshawbestown. Ceremony was performed by Bruno Torka, priest. Mary was born 10 May 1881.



Grandson Mosway/Mose/Moses (son of John Joseph) was said to be born in 1896 (age 12 on Durant roll)

Granddaughter Maggie (daughter of Charles) was born 22 Oct 1897.



Sadly baby Maggie died 21 Dec 1897.



Grandsons Moses and Charley (twin sons of Charles) were born 3 Jan 1899.



Granddaughter Clara (daughter of John Joseph) was said to be born in 1902 in Empire (from death record), but is listed at Lula, age 10 on Durant roll.

Granddaughter Josephine (daughter of John Joseph) was said to be born in 1900 (age 8 on Durant roll). Her tombstone gives her birth as 3 Jun 1903, but all census records say she is older than Margaret.

Granddaughter Margaret (daughter of John Joseph) was born 1901 (age 7 on Durant roll)

Grandson Joseph (son of Louisa) was born in 16 Aug 1905 (from his death). The son of Steven Munson, his parents never married.

Granddaughter Catherine (daughter of John Joseph) was born in 1906 (age 2 on Durant roll)

Granddaughter Louise (daughter of Louise with Jackson Brown), was born 18 May 1906. She died days later on 24 May 1906, of colic.



The Leelanau Enterprise 5 Jul 1906 announced that the steamers Illinois and Missouri would be stopping at the Leland pier.


Grandson Mitchell took a job as deckhand on the steamer Illinois.


The Leelanau Enterprise 16 May 1907 told that the steamer Missouri stopped with merchandise and picked up potatoes.

An accident in Chicago caused Mitchell to drown 22 May 1907. Info from the Cook county death index:



 His body was shipped home on the steamer Missouri.

Line 11 page 42 was Aush-e-tay-yaw or Margaret Nabinega, 66, P.O. Suttons Bay; husband John Nabinega, 80, on 1870 roll as Ne-ba-ne-gqaw-nay-be. Their daughter, Margaret, dead, was wife of Chas. Way-way-se-ma, P.O. Leland or Provemont crossed out, Glen Arbor, see 4-44.



Granddaughter Elizabeth (daughter of John Joseph) was born in 1909 (age 8 months in 1910 census)

Times were hard and the Leelanau Enterprise of 2 Dec 1909 mentions John Westman receiving $5 paid to charges not on poor farm.

John Sr. died of old age on 3 Mar 1911 in Glen Arbor. His age was given as 95. John was married, father of 3 children with 3 living, occupation given as basket maker. Burial was given as 5 Mar 1911 in Empire.

Grandson John, son of Charles, died 31 Oct 1930 in Glen Arbor, when a tree he was cutting fell on him and crushed his chest. Burial was in Peshawbestown


Daughter Louisa died 23 Jun 1931, burial in St. Kateri, Peshawbestown, Leelanau, Michigan


Son Charles died 5 Jul 1931 in Suttons Bay, Leelanau, Michigan. His age was given as 80. He was buried in Peshawbestown, undertaker was Martinson.


Mary (wife of John Joseph) died 24 Jun 1934 in Glen Arbor, Leelanau, Michigan. She was buried in Peshawbestown, undertaker was Martinson.


The Suttons Bay Courier of 9 Dec 1937 tells of Margaret receiving $23.73 for the year ending 30 Sep 1937.



The Suttons Bay Courier of 15 Dec 1938 lists Margaret receiving $37.40 for the year.


1940 Federal Census - Glen Arbor township, Leelanau county.

Mose is said to have enlisted in the army from the UP and went to Texax. He later married Christina Booker. Their son Mose Jr. was born 21 May 1929 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas, and died 25 May 1964 in Bexar, Texas.




Clara had two known children, Johnny Ross born around 1925 and Virginia Ross born around 1927. Clara attended the Indian Industrial Boarding School in Mt. Pleasant.

Josephine also attended attended the Indian Industrial Boarding School in Mt. Pleasant.
Josephine and her family are listed in the 1960 Muskegon city directory.


Josephine's daughter Romona died 9 Aug 1952 in Flint, Genesee, Michigan and is buried in St. Mary's cemetery in Muskegon


Josephine Anna Westman Genaux died 18 Oct 1965 in Muskegon and is buried beside her husband in St. Mary's cemetery. Her birth date is given as 3 Jun 1903.



Margaret attended the Indian Industrial Boarding School in Mt. Pleasant. She had a son Charles, surname Westman age 7 in 1940 census. He also used the surname Phillips, said to have died in around 1995.

Catherine never married and is said to have died at Mercy Hospital in Grand Rapids, year not given. It is said she died of spinal meningitis. "They shipped her body sealed in copper which we couldn't open to see her," Elizabeth said in an interview from 6 Aug 1976.

Elizabeth never married. Her birth date was given as 17 Aug 1910 and death as 19 Nov 1978 in Muskegon. She was mentioned in the Traverse City Record Eagle, 7 Sep 1949.
