Gabriel Pay-shaw-bay/Peshaba

 Gabriel Pay-shaw-bay / Peshaba was said to be born about 1842 in Michigan. He was the son of Benjamin Pay-shaw-bay and Agatha Kweshmegqaka.

Gabriel's father, Benjamin was a member of Kay-quay-to-say's band, which in 1855 had 225 people. He took, as his land allotment, the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of section 10, township 30 north, range 11 west, consisting of 40 acres, and lot #3 of section10, T30N, R11W, consisting of 59.25 acres.

Gabriel Pishaby, age 22, in the home of John B. Kegegobenasy and family 


Gabriel's parents were not found in 1860.


Gabriel Peshaba, of Eagle Town, age 20, married Sophia Gijigobinis of Gebosigaing, age 16, on 30 Nov 1861. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Ignatus Mrak. Witnessed by Peter Nanibawi and Francis Neniachi.

Daughter Ann/Nancy was said to be born about 1862.

19 Oct 1865 - Mortgage - Gabriel Pishaby and Sophia, his wife to Robert R. Clark of Chicago, Lot 1, section 10, T30N R11W, containing 10 acres, for $74.04. Leelanau County Mortgage Records, volume 1, pages 90 and 91.

Benjamin was not in the 1866 roll, and Agatha's name on the roll has not been determined.

Daughter Ann died 27 Nov 1871 in Bingham township at age 9. Cause of death was diptheria.

21 Feb 1874, Gabriel Pishawbay, son and only heir at law of Benjamin Pe shaw-bay, and Sophia, his wife, and Agatha, wife of said Benjamin Pe shaw-bay, of Leelanau County, sold to Robert Lee of Leelanau for $120, the SW1/4 of the SW1/4 of section 3 township 30 North, range 11 West. [This document tells us Benjamin died before 1874 and that Gabriel was considered the only heir.]

6 Mar 1875, Agatha, wife, and Gabriel, son and only heir, of Benjamin Payshawbay sold to Antoine Manseau, the SW1/4 of the NE1/4 of section 10, T30N, R11W, for $180. Leelanau county land records volume 7, pages 503 and 504.



Also on 6 Mar 1875, Mortgage, Antoine Manseau and Mary, his wife, to Gabriel Payshawbay for $100, for SW1/4 of NE1/4 of section 10, T30N R11W. Fully paid, satisfied and discharged 13 Jun 1876. Leelanau county mortgage records volume 3 page 122

Mother Agolite Pashaby died 17 Mar 1902 of acute nephritis, at age 85. She had 2 children born, 1 child living. Parents were given as Ka-ba-no-key and Waso-ve-ke-no. Gabriel was the informant.





Son Joseph, 20,  took out a license to marry Rose Chippeway, 21, daughter of Sam, on 31 Oct 1903, in Leelanau county. The marriage did not take place.





Gabriel died 17 Sep 1907 of valvular heart disease. His birth was given as 25 Mar 1846, married at age 21, 9 children born, 6 children living. Parents listed as Ben Pashabe and Agethia We-wesh-ma-qwa-ka. Daughter Katherine was the informant.

Daughter Mary, 42, was married on 21 Sep 1908 in Peshawbestown to Andrew Jocko, 50, son of John.



Wife Sophia died 2 Mar 1909 in Suttons Bay township of chronic brights. She was 67, widow, 11 children born, 5 children living, daughter of Antoine. The informant's name not given.

In August of 1910 son Frank asked to be appointed administrator of his parents estates in order to receive the Durant Roll payment due to each of them.



















Son Frank, 24, was married on 9 Jun 1912 in Meauwataka, Wexford county, to Bertha Green, 22, daughter of Harrison and Lizan.


On 12 Sep 1918 son Joseph registered for the draft. He gave his birth as 22 Dec 1885, was medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair. Occupation was laborer in Alba, Antrim, Michigan.




Son Frank died 20 Dec 1918 in Traverse City, of pneumonia. His birth was given as 12 Jun 1897, occupation as laborer in a factory.



Son Joseph was married 30 Sep 1919 in Traverse City to Martha Ostie Carey. 



Daughter Mary died prior to 1939 when husband Andrew Schocko died and was listed as widower of Mary.

Daughter Katherine died 19 Jan 1946 in Grand Traverse as Kate Bigbee.

Son Benjamin died 19 May 1950 in Traverse City His obituary was published in the Traverse City Record-Eagle on 24 May 1950.




Son Joseph died in May 1951.




Unanswered questions include:

Where were Agatha and her sisters in 1870, which would connect them to a Durant Roll entry. 

Are Nancy, died 17 Dec 1895, age 24, wife of Charles Pephigwa, no marriage record found, and Ann, born 7 Mar 1872, married 23 Jun 1891 to Jeremiah Waukazoo, no death record found, the same person?
