John Edowagonaby

This family used multiple names, Ne-saw-waw-quot, Edowagonaby, Mijakwanaam and Nishaw, each with multiple possible spellings. They lived in Cross Village, Emmet county, Michigan.


John Mijakwanaam, age 24, married Christine Wabagog, age 16, on 23 Jan 1865. [This is the only found instance of John using this name.]

Daughter, Susana Etawigoneby, died 30 Oct 1869 in Cross Village. Her age was given as 2 years, 1 month, 12 days. [Birth would have been 21 Aug 1867]




Son Joseph John Etiwigonebe was born 17 Jan 1870. Mother's name listed as Christine Wabajog.

Son Joseph died 21 Oct 1871 in Cross Village.



Son Stephen Etagonebe was born 21 Jul 1872 in Cross Village.



Daughter Madaline Etawagonabe, born 22 Apr 1875 in Cross Village.



Son Jeremiah Eta-wi-gon-a-by was born 17 Jan 1878 in Cross Village.


On 10 Nov 1879 John Idawegonbe purchased the Northwest fraction quarter of section 18, T37N, R6W.





The 1880 Federal Census for Cross Village shows the family with four children.

This is the last found mention of daughter Mary. No marriage or death record has been found.

John died 23 Oct 1882 in Emmet county. His last name was given as Idangoneb. He was 42, married, son of Paul and Mary Ann. Cause of death was killed while drunk.



What his death didn't says was that his wife was pregnant. Daughter Susie was born five months later, on 25 Feb 1883 in Cross Village. Her parents are listed as John and Christine Etawigonaby.



On 28 Sep 1888 the Emmet county register of deeds recorded John's land purchase of 1879.



Daughter Madeline, age 16, married Pian Keogemaw, age 24, on 13 Jul 1891 in Cross Village. Parents listed as John Etagonabe and Christine Wabigog, and John B. Keogamaw and Magaret Damin. Ceremony was performed by Bernardinus Abbink(?), Catholic Priest. Witnesses were Dominic Odonequat and Elizabeth Jawenesse.


Grandson Mary Kiogima was born 4 Jun 1892 in Cross Village.


Grandson Pius Peter Kiogima was born 29 Jul 1896 in Cross Village.


Sadly baby Pius died two months later on 6 Oct 1896 in Cross Village.


Granddaughter Mary Kiogima died 14 Jan 1897 in Cross Village.



Son Stephen Etoganabe died 12 May 1899 in Cross Village, son of John Etoganabe and Christine Wabogog.

Daughter Madeline died after the 1900 census but before 3 Dec1902 when Gabriel Pian Kiogima married  to Mary Ann Wasson.

Daughter Susie Edowagonaba married Louis Moses on 2 Jun 1902 in Cross Village


Christine Nashaw died of rheumatic rheumatism on 10 Dec 1902 in Cross Village. Her parents are given as Peter Wabagog and Angelic. States she had eight children, two living.


Jerry Idawgonebi married Katherine Shawanakwat on 4 May 1904 in Cross Village.



The Durant Field gave very confused look at the family.

Since the information is only as good as the person giving it, this page has several errors. Margaret Blackbird/Isaac is NOT part of this family, per her current field notes.. Since Jere and Susie are already the grandchildren of Paul, I believe that this is their father John's entry.

The field notes show that Susie was the daughter of John, granddaughter of Paul, 1st wife of Louis Moses, now with Peter Keshata.

Granddaughter Madeline Kashata, was born 22 Nov 1910. Susie wrote to Peter's sister, Lucy Trotochaud, to share the news.


Grandson John Kashata was born 12 May 1913. [Date from his death record].

Susie died 31 Oct 1916 in Kalkaska, Kalkaska county. Peter was informant and gave her father's name as Kersuan.



Son Jerry Nishaw registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918 in Emmet county. He gave his birth date as 17 Jan 1878. He was described as medium height and build with black eyes and black hair.

1930 Federal Census for grandson John Kashata has not been located.

1940 Federal Census for son Jerry Nishaw and grandson John Kashata has not been located.

Grandson John Keshata registered for the WWII draft 16 Oct 1940 in Cass county. He gave his birth date as 13 May 1914 in Rapid City, Antrim county.  He was described as Indian, 6' 1", 180 pounds, brown eyes, black hair, dark brown complexion.





Son Jerry Nishaw registered for the WWII draft on 27 Apr 1942 in Emmet county. He gave is birthdate as 17 Jan 1878 in Cross Village. He was described as Indian, no height or weight given, brown eyes, black hair, light brown complexion, blind in right eye.



Jeramiah/Jerry Nashaw died 16 Jan 1951. From the Petoskey Evening News 16 Jan 1951.


Petoskey Evening News 17 Jan 1951 told of funeral and burial plans.


Grandson John Kashata died 6 Apr 1953 in Muskegon, Muskegon county, leaving two children.
