Michael Paymesawaw

Michael Paymesawaw (Pamesawah, Pemisaa, Pamissa) was said to be born in 1805 in Michigan, parents unknown.

He married Mary who was said to be born in 1810-1815.

The first record found for Michael is the 1839 annuity roll.

Michael was a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band.

"In 1836, this band was under the Chief Mas kas se gun, with a population of 249 individuals. The village was located on Little Traverse Bay at the present day Harbor Springs."

"In 1839, the annuity payment roll shows a population of 494 and the chief was Ne saw waw quot. He remained the chief of this band until 1856 when he was replaced by Paul Saw waw nay se."

On 10 Mar 1852 Mitchell Pe mi saa, land certificate 8,015, purchased 40 acres - the NW1/4 of the SE1/4 of section 9, T34N, R6W, Bear Creek, Emmet county. It says paid in full, but does not give the amount paid.

13 Apr 1875, book D, page 58, Pay-me-saw-aw and wife Mary sold to Bishop B. Sutworth of Kalamazoo for the sum of $85 the "parcel of land situate and being in the Township of Bear Creek County of Emmet and State of Michigan, more particulary known and described as follows, to wit: commencing at a point where the East line of Lot two (2) in Section nine (9) Town thirty four North at Range Six West intersects with the shore on high water of Little Traverse Bay in said County theme running South ten rods, theme Westerly paralel with the shore of said Bay at an even distance afterwards from said shore to the West line of said lot number two int..... the shore of said Bay and the privleges thereunto belonging containing five acres of land be the same more or less"



Recorded 4 Oct 1875, Emmet county book D page 204, Pay me saw aw and wife Mary sold to Bishop B. Sudworth an additional five acres of land adjacent to the five acres sold in April for $20.



On 20 May 1876 Pay me saw aw sold 63.08 acres, section 9 T34N R6W for $100 to B. B. Sudworth, Emmet county Book D page 379. [Notice that Mary is not mentioned]



On 11 Jul 1876, Emmet county book D page 432, Mary wife of Pay me saw aw received $35 from B. B. Sutworth for the 63.08 acres above.




On 7 Nov 1877 Moses Pamesaw purchased the N1/2 of the NE1/4 of section 19, T34N, R6W, consisting of 80 acres, for the sum of $2 from Perry Hannah, as recorded in Emmet county book F page 296.



2 Jul 1880, Emmet county book H page 395, Mitchell Pemisaa receives the patent to the NW1/4 of the SE1/4 section 9 T34N R6W, consisting of 40 acres, that he purchased on 10 Mar 1852.

This is the last record found for Michael. His death was not recorded by Emmet county or by the state of Michigan.

Madeline, daughter of Moses and Sophia, married John Robinson, 27 Sep 1880 in Petoskey, Emmet county.


Mary, daughter of Moses and Sophia, died 25 May 1884 in Hayes township, Charlevoix county. She was 12 years 5 months.


Granddaughter Eliza, child of Moses and Sophia was born 5 Feb 1886. [Date from death certificate.]

Grandson Enos Mitchell took out a marriage license to Maggie Meongwie on 19 May 1890 in Emmet county. She was 20 years old, the daughter of William Meongwie. While the marriage ceremony didn't take place, the couple had two daughters, Elizabeth born about 1891 and Julia born about 1893.



Grandson Enos married Emma Pontiac on 8 Aug 1895 in Bay Shore, Charlevoix county.


Son Moses sent his orphaned granddaughter Theresa to Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial School under the names Pempsa and Roundsky, in 1894-1899.

The Durant Roll shows Michael's son Moses and daughter Mary Kewanakezhick living. Death certificates have not been found for either, nor has the 1910 Federal Census.

Moses' daughter Eliza Pamesawah died 13 Jan 1911 in Elk Rapids, Antrim county. Her birth was given as 5 Feb 1886. She was buried in Kewadin, Antrim county.



Eliza was the last known grandchild of Michael's.

Theresa Roundsky, (wife of Edward Anderson), born 25 Oct 1882, died 25 Jan 1955 in Elk Rapids, Antrim county. She was survived by 2 sons and 2 daughters, while 4 sons and 3 daughter preceded her in death.
