Sarah Cobb Petonquit

Sarah was born 10 May 1854, the daughter of Kaw-be-mway-aw-she and possibly Charlotte.

She married Joseph Pedonquit/Petonquet prior to 1870.

Besides the unnamed child above Joseph and Sarah had the following children were: Jackson born 1878, Steven born 1879, Moses born 1884, Wallace born 1885, Delia born 1889 and  Julius born 1890.

1894 Michigan State Census - Leelanau Township lists Joseph Pedonquet, 40; wife Iella, 39, 11 children born, 6 children living; sons Jackson, 17; Steven, 15; Moses, 13; Wallace, 12; daughter Delia, 5; and son Julius, 3

 

Daughter Eliza was born 1895

Sadly, son Moses died 7 May 1900 of heart disease. His age is given as 16, and he is buried at Onominese Cemetery.


Tragedy struck a second time that month when son Jackson died 29 May 1900 of influenza. His age is given as 22, and he is buried at Onominese Cemetery.


Son Steven and daughter Delia are not in the 1900 census, death certificates not located.

On 29 Jun 1900 the Federal Census, Leelanau township, Leelanau county, lists the family as Joseph Sagwah, born Apr 1848, age 52, married 30 years, farmer, owns free farm, full Ottawa. Wife Sarah was born Aug 1854, age 45, married 30 years, 12 children born, 3 children living. Son Wallace, born Jul 1883, age 16, day laborer; son Julius, born Aug 1891, age 8; and daughter Lizza, born Jun 1895, age 4.



Son Wallace died 23 Jan 1902 at age 17. He is buried at Onominese cemetery.


The field notes for the Durant Roll, #18 page 45 given Paw-ge-gay-naw-naw-quot or Joseph Pe-don-quot, 66, Northport, wife Sarah, age 58, on 1870 roll with husband. Children are Julius, 18, not married, and Eliza, 13.


The 1910 Federal Census of Leelanau township has Joseph Pedonquet, age 60, married 40 years, farmer at general farm; Sarah, wife, age 60, married 40 years, 8 children born, 2 children living, only speaks Indian; Julius, son, age 18, farmer at house farm; Liza, daughter, age 14.


Husband Joe died 23 May 1915 at the age of 73, parents unknown. He is buried at Onominese Cemetery.


On 6 Jun 1916 daughter Eliza, age 19, born Northport, married Ben Stevens, 24, son of Louis Stevens and Mary McKee. The ceremony was performed by Joseph Bauer, Pastor of St. Francis Church in Traverse City. Witnesses were Dan and Christine Chippeway.


On 12 Nov 1916 Ben and Eliza welcomed daughter Julia. Sarah was now a grandmother.

Son Julius registered for the draft on 12 Apr 1918. He is unsure of his birth date, is of medium height and weight, with brown eyes and black hair.



The 1920 Federal Census finds Sarah living at 303 Vine Street in Traverse City. Family consists of Ben Stevens, head, 27, occupation of repairing shoes in a shop; Eliza, wife, 22; George, son, 1 5/12; Pedonquit, Sarah, mother-in-law, 69. [Julia is not listed with Ben and Eliza].



According to the Leelanau Enterprise of 20 Oct 1921, son Julius is sentenced to Ionia, crime not given.


Eliza divorced Ben on 22 Jul 1929 on grounds of extreme cruelty and non-support. He was ordered to pay $1 a week until the youngest child reached the age of 16. Children are listed as Julia, 12; George, 10; Catherine, 3; Mary, 1.



The 1930 Federal Census finds Sarah in Leelanau Township. Her last name is given as Pusengwaw, she is 76 and widowed. With her are Elizah Stevens, daughter, 29, occupation of basket maker at home; George Stevens, grandson, 12 and Katherine Stevens, granddaughter, 4 11/12. [Julia is not listed.]



Sarah died 23 Aug 1938 in Leelanau township. Under cause of death is "Findings of coroner's jury Shock and injuries on head and body caused by severe beating at the hands of her son Julius Petonquot" "Homicide"


She is buried in Onominese Cemetery.

Suttons Bay Courier of 15 Dec 1938 show Sarah's burial cost of $10 being paid by Leelanau county.




It is currently unknown if Julius served any time for his mother's death, but he is listed as a farm laborer in the 1940 census in Leelanau county.
