Pay-shaw-naw-quo-um





Not much is known about Pay-shaw-naw-quo-um. He is listed (as Pash au o quang) in the 1839 annuity roll as number 51, Band or Village of Grand Traverse, under Chief Koos say. His family consisted of one man, one woman and two children. He received a payment of $35.36

1855 Land Allotment

"Aish quay go nay be was the chief of a large band that was originally located north of
Torch Lake in Antrim County. The population in 1836 was 292 and was 409 in 1837. Aish quay
go nay be was a delegate and signed the 1836 treaty. He, along with members of his band
purchased lands prior to the 1855 treaty in Antrim County, township 29 north, 9 west. He remained chief of this band until 1868 when Tay baw se ke zhick was listed as chief on the 1868
through 1872 payment rolls. By 1855, the population of this band was 112 and Aish quay go
nay be and the majority of his band selected their allotments near the lands they had
purchased in Antrim County." from Larry Wyckoff. 

Pay shaw naw quo um  selected the E1/2 of the SW1/4 of section 30 T31N R11W 80 acres [This land is in Leelanau county, west of Omena.]

Since Pay shaw naw quo um is not listed on the 1865 annuity roll, it is believed he died between 1861 and 1865. His sons (Naw o quay ke zhick #12) and (Naw we ge zhe go #20) are each listed as 1 man, 1 woman, 1 child; each received $12.00 under Chief Aish quay go nay be.



In the land records of Antrim county on 4 Feb 1867,  Peter Mark Nahwaygezic and Martin Nockwegezic are named heirs of Pashawnaquong regarding the purchased land NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 section 2 Townshhip 29 north Range 9 west - Milton township.

On Mary 9 Mar 1874 son Joseph Payshawnawquam sold the SE1/4 of the SW1/4 of section 30, township 31 north, range 11 west to Wolfgang Kolacik for $250. This is the allotment land from 1855.






It is not known if Peter and Martin are the two children from the 1839 roll or if one or both of those children died and these men are younger.

Mary/May-waw-waw-che-won, referred to as Peter Mark's sister in newspaper articles, was said to be born about 1845. She was a grown woman listed in the 1870 annuity roll and listed as #30 page 46 on the Durant Roll Field Notes. Her age was given as 70 in 1908, wife of Ne-so-kat/Jacob Sogot. 

Joseph, called Joe Marks was referred to as Peter Mark's brother on the 1908 Durant Roll Field Notes (#30 page 41), as second husband of Margaret Ance. The field notes give his death as 22 Feb 1908. Joseph was said to be born about 1850, but was not grown and included on the 1870 annuity roll.
