From They Came to South Fox Island by Kathy Nickerson Craker -

"The Raphael brothers had allotments and worked in the mills, first for the Leo and then for the Zapf Fruit Packing Company. Joseph, Ambrose, Mitchell and Peter were the sons of Raphael and Rose Gagaishe. Their sister Christine was married to August Ance."

"Joseph Raphael worked at several lumber mills on the mainland and also for a time at the mills on South Fox. During his time on the island, he sometimes visited the lighthouse residents. In the parlor at Assistant Keeper William Green's quarters, Joe enjoyed playing Mrs. Green's pump organ."

"Ambrose was the first of the brothers to leave the island. Needing more adventure, he entered the merchant marines."

"Mitchell Raphael worked as a sawyer in Leo'smill, and later worked for Zapf. For 17 years this was his occupation. His knowledge of wood came in handy when his wooden leg needed replacing; he made his own. While Mitchell (called Mike) lived in the men's quarters at the lumber camp, his family was back on the mainland."

"Peter Raphael was mainly a farmer. He raised cattle and had a big garden and took care of the horses for Zapf."
