Lucille Priscilla Anderson was born 25 Mar 1903 in Elk Rapids, the second child (first daughter) of Edward Anderson and Theresa Roundsky.
Lucy had 12 children by five different men, not a totally unheard of act. The part that was confusing is she had three children by her first (and only legal) husband, one by mate #2; one by mate #3, then two more by mate #2, two more by husband #1, two by mate #4, went back with husband #1 and later lived with mate #5 (miscarriage), mate #6 (miscarriage) and finally one child with #7.
Lucy is listed as age 8 in the 1910 Federal Census, living with her parents in Elk Rapids, Antrim, Michigan. The family is living in Walton, Grand Traverse, Michigan when Edward registers for the draft on 10 Sep 1918. In 1920 Lucy is listed as 16, living with her parents in Brown, Manistee, Michigan.
On 15 Jul 1920 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse, Michigan, Lucy was married to Aaron James Shaw, son of John Shaw and Sarah Tipsico.
Aaron was born 28/29 Jun 1892 in Mount Pleasant, Isabella, Michigan, but registered for the draft in Manistee, Michigan.
Lucy and Aaron had their first child, Madeline Shaw, on 3 Dec 1920 in Elk Rapids. The couple's next child is Geneva, born 24 May 1923 also in Elk Rapids (dying 11 Sep 1940 in Howell, Livingston, Michigan.) A third child, Albert was born 10 Jun 1923, died 4 Sep 1962 in Detroit. Albert's birth date which would be only 17 days after Geneva's is from his tombstone. Perhaps Geneva was born in 1922.
Lucy and Aaron split up (but never divorced). The Traverse City Record Eagle of 30 Jul 1923 tells of an auto accident that results in Aaron's arrest for wife desertion.
The Traverse City Record Eagle continued the story on 31 Jul 1923.
While apart from Aaron, Lucy meets Edward Judson, a widower with a young son Harry. Edward was born 1 Nov 1891 in Manistee according to his draft registration dated 5 Jun 1917 in Benzie, Michigan. (His death record gives a birth date of 18 Nov 1892 in Tallman, Mason County, Edward Jr.'s death gives Sr.'s birthplace as Oceana County.) While Edward had married Alice Wasaquam on 2 Apr 1913 in Honor, Benzie County, Harry's marriage record gives his mother as Rose Madagame. Edward and Alice had a son Peter, born 29 Dec 1913 died 29 Apr 1914; and Alice was pregnant when she died of TB 18 Feb 1917 in Benzie, Michigan.
Lucy and Edward had a daughter, Elizabeth Marie 8 Aug 1924. This couple also splits up and on 27 Jan 1926 Lucy gives birth to daughter Elsie Irene, daughter of Eugene Mark.
Lucy and Edward reunite and have son Edward, born Mar 1927 died 13 Dec 1927, and daughter Effie Virginia, born 31 Aug 1928 in Elk Rapids.
On 14 Dec 1928 Edward Sr. is electrocuted while working on the damn in Elk Rapids. Lucy is informant on Edward's death and gives Alice as Edward's wife.
The 1930 Federal Census of Elk Rapids finds Lucy Shaw living next to her parents. She is listed as a widow, with children Madeline, Geneva and Albert Shaw, Elizabeth, Elsie and Effie Judson and 18 year old step-son Harry Judson.
Lucy and Aaron reunite. An unnamed female, surname Shaw, is stillborn on 23 Jul 1930 in Elk Rapids and a son Irving Donald Shaw is born 10 Dec 1931, also in Elk Rapids.
Lucy and Aaron split yet again and Lucy has two children with Benny Lewis. Daughter Evelyn Grace Lewis is born 2 Mar 1935. Son Gordon Francis Lewis was born 4 May 1936 and died 6 Feb 1937.
The 1940 Federal Census finds Lucy and Aaron together again in Elk Rapids. Lucy is the one giving the information and gives the children their father's surnames.
