Jane Mark Wabose George

Jane Mark was said to be born in Nov 1876 in Michigan, the daughter of Peter Mark Nah-we-ke-zhick and Anna Sha-wa-da-se. The couple's second known child, she joined brother Alfred who was born in 1871.

On 25 Oct 1890 Jane arrived at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She was listed as 16, full Chippewa, daughter of Peter Mark, from Aarwood, Michigan. 

Part of going to school was called outings. This was where the children were sent into homes to work. 14 Apr 1892 to 13 Sep 1893, Jane was sent to Hattie Hall of Ridley Park, PA; 20 Apr 1894 to 14 Sep 1894, Jane was sent to R. Russell in Liberty Grove, MD; 9 Apr 1895 to 29 Oct 1895, Jane was sent to S. Felton in Olney, PA.

Jane left Carlisle on 29 Jun 1896, time out (5 years were up.)



While Jane was away at school sister Eliza was born 28 Feb 1891, brother William was born c1893 and died before 1900, and brother Francis was born 9 Nov 1895. Brother Alfred had married Nacy Walker on 28 Aug 1894 in Kalkaska county. 

Jane returned to Carlisle on 14 Aug 1896, this time accompanied by younger sister Josie.

From 2 Apr 1897 to 15 Sep 1898 Jane was sent to R. Belt, in Wellsville, PA.

Jane left Carlisle on 5 Jul 1899 due to ill health.

On 2 Jun 1900 Edward Anderson and Jane took out a marriage license in Antrim county, but didn't marry.



Sister Rosie was born 27 Jun 1900.

Edward married Theresa Roundsky on 12 Aug 1900, while Jane married Frank Wabose, date unknown.

Daughter Violetta was born 2 Sep 1900. [Date from her death certificate.]

Daughter Martha was born 22 Feb 1902.

Sister Marion was married 10 Mar 1902 in Alden, Antrim, Michigan to Thomas Ogenawkegado King.

Son Francis was born 27 Jul 1903.

Son Francis died 16 Apr 1904 in Antrim county, cause of death pneumonia. He was buried in the Kewadin Indian Cemetery in Kewadin, Antrim, Michigan


Daughter Violetta died 1 Oct 1905 in Rapid City, Kalkaska, Michigan. Cause of death was scalded. She was buried in the Kewadin Indian Cemetery in Kewadin, Antrim, Michigan



Son George Howard was born 27 Mar 1906 in Kewadin.

Mother Anna died 25 Aug 1906 in Clearwater, Kalkaska, Michigan of nephritis [an inflamation of the kidneys].




Husband Frank died 31 Mar 1907 in Wilson, Kalkaska, Michigan. Cause of death was consumption. He was buried in the Kewadin Indian Cemetery in Kewadin, Antrim, Michigan.

Jane replied to a form sent by Carlisle School at some time between Frank's death in 1907 and her marriage to James in 1910.

Jane married James George on 19 Sep 1910 in Rapid City, Kalkaska, Michigan. 


According to Leone LaCure Guy (author of "Memories Album of Rapid City") George Wabose was called George George by some after his mother's marriage.


Son Henry was born 19 Sep 1911 in Salem, Michigan (most likely in Allegan county.)

On 1 Sep 1913 George, age 9, and Martha, age 11, were admitted to Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School for three years. Parent was Jane Waboose George of Rapid City. The children were listed as 3/4 Native.

Son John was born 19 Nov 1913 in Michigan.


Sister Josie did not return to Michigan following school at Carlisle. She was married in 1913 in Philadelphia to Robert Piper.

Sister Eliza married 5 Jul 1913 in Athens, Calhoun, Michigan to Joseph Cyrus Pamptopee.

In April of 1914 Jane replied to a form sent by Carlise Indian Boarding School



1914-15 school year at Mt. Pleasant - George was 10, Martha was 12




1915-1916 school year at Mt. Pleasant - George was 11, Martha was 13




1916-1917 school year at Mt. Pleasant - the children were admitted 1 Sep 1916 for 3 years. Mother was Jane George of Rapid City, George was 12, Martha was 14.



Brother Francis died 9 Aug 1917 in Kalkaska. Leone LaCure Guy (author of "Memories Album of Rapid City") said Francis had been hit in the chest by a baseball and that caused his death. Real cause of death was tuberculosis. She also told me that a window had to be removed from the house because the coffin would not fix through the door.


1917-1918 school year at Mt. Pleasant, George was still 12 and Martha still 14.




1918-1919 school year at Mt. Pleasant - George did not attend. Martha was 16, mother Jane George of Alba, notes say Martha was dropped 30 Set 1918 and sent home with tuberculosis.


Son John died on 30 Apr 1919. Cause was acute indigestion.

Sister Marion was married 6 Jan 1921 in Allegan county to Edward St. John.

Sister Josephine died 30 Apr 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her body was returned to Rapid City, Michigan for burial.


Father Peter Mark Nah-we-ke-zhick died 14 Jun 1926 in Solon, Leelanau, Michigan. He was buried in Kewadin, Antrim, Michigan. While his age was given as 106, he was probably 84.




Son Henry was admitted to Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School on 7 Sep 1926. He was from Sault Ste. Marie, age 15, full Native. Notes say he was awol November 5-6 and sent home May 30th.



Sister Rosie died 14 Feb 1927 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Sister Marion applied for a marriage license on 26 May 1927 in Calhoun county to marry John T. Paul. No marriage took place.

Waboose, Jane, rents for $10 per month, owns a radio, 56, married, first married at 27, no occupation

1930 Federal Census - Hayes, Otsego, Michigan

George, Jim, boarder, 56, single, teamster at lumber camp.



Brother David died 4 Jun 1930 in Acme, Grand Traverse, Michigan.

Son Henry was married 16 Nov 1933 to Anna Kewaygoshkum.

Son George was married 21 Nov 1936 in Petoskey to Mary Durant.


Husband James died 4 Nov 1937 in Charlevoix, Michigan. Cause was bronchial pneumonia. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey, Michigan.



Henry's wife Anna died 21 Mar 1938, leaving two little girls.



Son Henry was married Jun 1939 to Mary Jane Tepakeah. [Date from Mary Jane's obit.]


Son Henry registered for the draft on 16 Oct 1940 in Mackinac county. He gave his birth as 19 Sep 1911 in Salem, Manistee, Michigan.





Son George registered for the draft on 28 Oct 1940 in Petoskey. He gave his date of birth as 27 Mar 1906 in Kewagoo, and was currently employed by the W.P.A. George was described as 5 foot 7 1/2 inches, 140 pound, brown eyes, black hair, sallow complexion. There was a burn scar under his right arm.






Son Henry's wife, Mary Jane, died Feb 1952. Her obit was printed in the Petoskey Evening News of 15 Feb 1952.



Brother Alfred died 22 Apr 1952 in Bradley, Allegan, Michigan.

Sister Eliza died 27 Jan 1956 in Marengo, Calhoun, Michigan.

Jane died 1 Oct 1956 in Charlevoix, Michigan. Her obituary was printed in the Petoskey News-Review on 2 Oct 1956. 



Son Henry died 17 Jun 1970 in Charlevoix, Michigan. His obituary was printed 19 Jun 1970 in the Petoskey News-Review.




Son George died 12 Sep 1975 in Harbor Springs, Emmet, Michigan. His obituary was printed in the Petoskey News-Review, 15 Sep 1975.
