David King - Nancy Fisher



David King, also called Shah-pah-qua-um, was said to be born c1840, parents currently unknown. He was said to have died before 1907 [Durant Roll Field Notes]

David married Mak-bath/Nancy Fisher, date unknown. Nancy was said to be born 1841, the daughter of O-che-ganse and Mary.

David and Nancy were parents of  6 known children. [1900 and 1910 census says 13 children]

Son George was said to be born in Old Mission, Grand Traverse, Michigan, about 1852. [28 in 1880, age 50 on his death record - 12 Feb 1900 in Elk Rapids. He married Mary Saw-gau-se-gay, 1 known child.

Daughter Mary was born about 1856 [24 in 1880]

Son Jacob was born about 1860 [20 in 1880, 33 in 1900] Died 13 Nov 1905

Daughter Eliza was said to be born 12 Mar 1866 [from her death record, she was age 8 in 1880, age 41 in 1908] Died 25 Jan 1931 in Yuba, Grand Traverse, Michigan. She married Peter Ance.

Daughter Josie was born c1870 [called Joseph age 10 in 1880]. Died 27 May 1907 at age 38. Married Alexander Cooper, 4 known children.

Daughter Susan was possibly born 12 Jun 1873 in Milton, Antrim, Michigan. She died 21 Oct 1891 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

23 Jun 1882 - Me-kin-dah, wife of David King, also known as Nancy King, daughter of O-che-gance, deceased, and sister of Charles Ching-waw-naw-guam, also known as Charles Fisher, deceased and sister also of Antoine Saw-gaw, deceased, sol to Solomon Goldman for $30, the NW1/4 of the NW14/, the NW1/2 of the NE1/4, tne NE1/4 of NW1/4 and the N1/2 of the SW1/4 of the NW1/4 all section 12, and the N1/2 of the SW1/4 of the SW1/4 of section, all being in township 29 North, range 9 west. 






Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded in 1879 by Capt. Richard Pratt. He took children from throughout the US and educated them in his attempt to "kill the Indian, save the man." One such student was Susan King. 



Susie arrived at Carlisle on 25 Oct 1890 for a period of 5 years., father was David King, both parents were living, she was full Chippewa, age 16. It is doubtful that her parents ever saw her again.



Daughter Susie, age 17, daughter of David King,  died 21 Oct 1891 of typho malarial fever 







Susie was "originally interred in ground for Indian Wards transferred to Govt. 22 Dec 1879. Name of cemetery - Carlisle Barracks Post, Penn., grave location sec. or plot B, grave or lot #22. 




[In September 2026, Susie will be disinterred and brought to Michigan for burial in her ancestral homeland.]

He was widowed, 1 child born, 1 child living. Cause of death was pneumonia and heart failure. Burial was in Elk Rapids Cemetery. Informant was Eliza King, undertaker Alex Cooper.


Son Jacob died 13 Nov 1905 in Elk Rapids, Antrim, Michigan. His birth was given as 1865 in Elk Rapids, age 40. Parents were David and Nancy King. Occupation was laborer. Cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis, burial in Kewadin. Informant was George Russell.



Daughter Josie Cooper died 27 May 1907 in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan. Her birth was given as 1869 in Michigan, age 38. Parents were David King and Meekenda. Cause of death was Following ? for cancer of womb. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery, informant Alexander Cooper.

Daughter Eliza  - Mrs. Peter Ance, died 25 Jan 1931 in Yuba, Grand Traverse, Michigan. Her birth was given as 12 May 1866 in Antrim county, Michigan, age 64 years, 8 mnths, 13 days. Her parents were David King, born Michigan and Nancy Fisher, born Northport. Husband was Peter Ance, her occupation was given as laborer. [His occupation?] Cause of death was bronchial pneumonia, burial at Yuba, informant Peter Ance.




Descendants:

George had one child, Moses King, married Lillian Mark,  had 7 children and at least 25 grandchildren

Eliza married Peter Ance and had two children; daughter Nellie married Peter Wesaw, had 8 children and at least 22 grandchildren.

Josie married Alex Cooper, had 4 children and 8 known grandchildren.
