Mary Elizabeth Jeanette Foster was the daughter of William Foster and Elizabeth Poisson/Fisher. William was born 9 Mar 1846 at Hudson Bay, Manitoba, Canada and died 13 Dec 1930 at Sugar Island, Chippewa, Michigan. Elizabeth was born 28 Apr 1855 at Sault Ste Marie, Chippewa, Michigan and died 22 Mar 1908 at Payment, Sugar Island, Chippewa, Michigan.

Jeanette was married to Louis Rickley and they had five daughters, Florence, Louise, Charlotte, Lucile and Margaret.

Louis Rickley was born 31 Aug 1858 in Algoma, Ontario, Canada, the son of Antine Recollet (born 1813 Green Island, Canada, died 11 Aug 1912 in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan) and Charlotte Poudrier Lemay (born 1827 in Penetanguishene, Canada). 

The 1900 Federal Census has not been located for Louis and Jeanette.

On 29 Dec 1901 daughters Charlotte, Ethel, Florence and Lucy arrived at the Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School for a period of three years. Their father is listed as Louis Rickley, living. The girls are listed as full Native in one year and 1/2 in the next. Also arriving at the school on the same day are Emma and Rose Rickley, daughters of Frank. The girls are cousins through their mothers. It is unknown if and/or how their fathers were related.

The National Archives at Chicago has records for Lucile and Maggie Rickey, daughters of Louis and Jennie.

Charlotte and Daniel had three children, Emily Florence, born 28 Feb 1912; Irene Janet, born 30 Jun 1913, and Thomas, born May 1919.

5. Margaret Elizabeth Rickley was born 9 Mar 1898 on Sugar Island, Chippewa, Michigan. She was baptized 12 Apr 1898 at Waninatinaug, Lake George, Sugar Island, by Father Ganieur, sponsors were Louis and Marianne Hatch.

Margaret's first child, Lavinia, was the daughter of Benedict Sagataw (son of George Sigwate/Sagataw and Christine Osawwawnemeke).

     Lavinia was b. 17 Nov 1916 at Sault Ste Marie. She married Levi Feathers (son of Joseph Feathers and Eliza). Levi died 13 Mar 1937 in Marquette county. Lavinia died 26 Dec 1982 in Petoskey.

Margaret next married Amos Feathers (son of Louis Feathers and Sarah Lambert) and they were the parents of two children:

1) Ralph Louis was born 11 Nov 1925 St. Jaques, Delta, Michigan. He died 15 Oct 1998.

2) Ione Lorraine was born 12 Jan 1928, Ogontz, Delta, Michigan. She died 11 Apr 1994 in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan.

Amos died 24 Apr 1931 in Manistique, Schoolcraft county.

Margaret married third to Joseph Moses Beaver (son of Moses Beaver and Elizabeth Wheaton) 6 Jan 1943 in Nahma, Delta, Michigan

Margaret was then married to Simon Wabanimkee, 12 May 1956 in Charlevoix.

Margaret died 28 Aug 1973 in Charlevoix and is buried at Brookside Cemetery.

Alfred Mark

Alfred Mark was the first born child of Peter Mark Nah-we-ke-zhick and Anna Sha-wa-da-se. His birth is recorded as 2 Aug 1871 in Milton township, Antrim county, Michigan.

On 28 Aug 1894 in Clearwater township, Kalkaska county, Michigan, Alfred, 23, married Nancy Cynthia Walker from Allegan county, Michigan. She is 19, the daughter of John Walker and Betsy Wezoo/Waukazoo.

The family moves to Allegan county where they have three children. Jennie is born 20 Sep 1895, Albert is born 15 Feb 1897, Angeline is born 19 Nov 1898. Son Robert is born about 1900, place unknown.

The 1900 census has Alfred with his parents in Clearwater township, Kalkaska county. He is listed as single. Where are Nancy and the children? Did whoever answered the census takers questions misunderstand and list all the children whether living there or not? [Alfred's sister Lily is married and Josie is at school in Pennsylvania. Both should also not be listed with their parents.]

Alfred, Nancy and children move back up north where a son, Simon, born 21 Sep 1902, died 23 Oct 1903 in Clearwater township, Kalkaska county, Michigan.

In 1906 they are back in Allegan county. An unnamed son is born on 4 Aug 1906 and dies 6 hours later (5 Aug 1906) of heart disease. Son Thomas is born 5 Aug 1906 and dies on 16 Aug 1906 of marasmus / undernorishment.

After the lose of two children sadness strikes again nine days later, when Alfred's mother, Anna, died 25 Aug 1906 in Clearwater, Kalkaska, Michigan.

No. 12 page 53 - Nancy is listed on her parents' page as child #4, age 32, resides in Bradley, husband Alfred, age 34, resides Bradley note to see 10/46, children Albert, 12, Geona, NE, Robert, 10, Geona, NE, Stephen, 8, Jennie, 13, Angeline, 30 (error - she is 9), Peter, born Jan 08 on second roll.

Son Peter is born 11 Jan 1908 and Guy is born 25 Sep 1909, both in Allegan county, Michigan.

In 1910 they are living in Wayland township, Allegan county, Michigan. Alfred is 36 and a farmer. Nancy is 32, says she has given birth to nine children, seven children are living. These seven are Jennie, 14; Albert, 12; Angeline, 10; Robert, 8; Stephen, 4; Peter, 2 and Guy, 6 months.

The 1910 census for the Genoa Indian School, Genona, Nance, Nebraska lists Albert Marks, 13 and Robert Marks, 9, both born in Michigan as being students.

Son Guy died 9 Sep 1910.

Daughter Phoebe is born 30 May 1911. Son Colbert is born 1 Jul 1912. Both in Allegan county.

Son Robert died 5 Jan 1912 at the Mt Pleasant Indian School in Isabella county of tuberculosis. He is buried in the school cemetery.

Daughter Jennie died 14 Aug 1915 in Wayland, Allegan county of tuberculosis. She is listed as married, surname Miller, but no marriage record has been found.

1918 a difficult year, with three children dying.

Andrew died 21 May 1918 in Bradley of whooping cough.

Albert died the next day, 22 May 1918 of tuberculosis

In September 1918 Alfred registered for the draft.

Daughter Phoebe died of acute nephritis on 24 Oct 1918.

Angeline married Peter Pokagon Stevens on 11 May 1919 in Salem, Allegan county.

The 1920 census was taken on 2 Feb. 1920. Listed are Alfred, age 46, farmer, wife Nancy, age 42 and son Colbert, age 7.

On 27 Jun 1920 son Colbert dies of tuberclosis.

Alfred's father, Peter, died on 14 Jun 1926 in Solon, Leelanau county.

On 20 Aug 1928 son Stephen married first wife, Rose Pigeon.

Rose died 5 Mar 1929 in childbirth - twin boys - death record not yet found. The babies were adopted by Fred and Jennie Webb. Neil Ogmuu Webb (original name unknown) died 29 Oct 1929. His death certificate has Steven Marks and Rose Pigeon given as his parents, with Fred Webb as informant.

The other child, Herbert Sampson Mark, had his name changed to Noel Fredrick Webb, and was raised by the Webbs.

1930 Federal Census, Wayland Township, Allegan county lists Alfred, 57, married at 21, occupation farmer crossed out and basket marker written; wife Nancy, 53, married at 16, no occupation; daughter Angeline, 29, married at 20, laborer - odd jobs; son Stephen, 23, laborer - odd jobs; son Peter, 20, laborer - odd jobs; daughter Grace, 9, no occupation. It is unknown why Angeline is listed with her parents. Perhaps she was visiting their house when the census taker came. She is also listed with her husband Peter Stevens and their children.

Link to Mt. Pleasant school records from National Archives in Chicago. These are not actual school records, more like social service records in the files. From these letters it is learned that Nancy has gone blind.

Daughter Angeline Stevens died 8 Jul 1938 in Plainwell, Allegan county after childbirth.

1940 census Wayland township, Allegan county lists Alfred, 66, wife Nancy 63, and granddaughter Rose, 10. They lived in the same house in 1935. No occupations are listed.

Nancy Walker Marks died 19 Mar 1949 in Bradley, while Alfred died 22 Apr 1952 also in Bradley.

Out of 14 children, only three survived the parents. Stephen died Mar 1959. Peter died 21 Jan 1962 and the youngest Grace died 8 Oct 2001 in Benzonia, Benzie county.

This public notice regards a tax sale held in 1938, 1939, 1940 for land in Kalkaska County and owners Alfred Mark, his wife Nancy and sister Jane George. It was published in the Leader and Kalkaskian on March 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12, 17th, 19th, 24th and 26th in 1977.  Alfred, Nancy and Jane had all died over 20 year prior.

Kay-wis

The first record found naming Kay-wis is the 1855 land allotment. He received the N1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section 33, of T16N R16W - 80 acres. [This is in Mason county.]

"Shay quay naw was the chief of the band known as the Thornapple River Band. This band was located prior to the 1836 treaty, at the village known as 'Middle Village' in Barry County. The population in 1836 was 106. After 1836 this village was move to the north side of the Thornapple River near Thornapple Lake and lands were purchased there by members of the band. Shay quay naw remained chief of this band until 1859 when Aish quay o say became the chief, and he was still listed as chide in 1872. The population of the band in 1855 is 115. This probably represents the total of this band and the other Thornapple River band under Chief Maish ke aw she which were sometimes combined under one of the chiefs on the payment rolls. The actual population for this band was probably closer to 50."

"This band remained on the land they purchased until they removed to their 1855 reservation. Shay quay naw and about one half of his band took their allotments in Crystal Township and the
remainder, except one, took theirs in Elbridge Township." [Information from Larry Wykoff.]

The 1857 annuity roll has Kay wis listed as #12, 1 male, 1 female, 1 child, receiving $9.48, under chief Shay Quay Naw.

1858 annuity roll -  Kay wis - 1 male, 1 female, 2 children, receiving $16.84. Still under Grand River chief Shay quay naw.

1859 annuity roll - Kay-wis, #9, 1 male, 1 female, 2 children, receiving $5.48. Now under chief Aish quay o say.

The 1860 Federal Census, Indian Reservation, Oceana county, Michigan shows Ka-wis, age 35, with Ka Ka Qua, age 30 and daughters, An na to qua, age 5 and Mish Kosh sequa, age 2

The 1907 Durant Roll Field Notes show Kay-wis (his name underlined to show deceased). His unnamed wife is listed as dead. Listed children are Mary, age 60, married Charles Genereaux; Maggie, deceased, married William Micko; Joe Kay-wis/Joe Smith, 41, married Sarah Fitch Anderson; and William Kay-wis Smith, 36, married to Mary Joe.

The Durant Roll Field Notes give Waw-saish-caw-no-quay as William's mother. She is deceased. Under husband is lightly written Kay-wis. (On the 1870 annuity roll she is #16 page 52, 0 men, 1 woman, 2 children, receiving $45.90. - Unanswered questions are who is the other child, if William is one of the two, or who are the two children if William is actually born in 1872 and not one of the counted children.)

"Sometime around 1850 a number of members from Caub mo say's Flat River band moved further up the Flat River into Montcalm County. They purchased lands in Douglass Township and formed a new band under Chief Shaw qawa baw no. In 1853 there were 84 members in this band which increased to 129 in 1855. He was listed as the chief of this band in 1865 and in 1866. Aish ke baw gosh was the new chief and was still isted as chief in 1872. This band took their allotments near Caub ma say's band in Elbridge, Crystal and Custer townships." [Information from Larry Wykoff.]

Mary Kaywis married first to John David and had two children: Joe David (also called Joe John) was born Jan 1884 in Elbridge, Oceana county and died before 1910; and Nancy McDagnott. John David died 6 Mar 1906)

Mary next married George Peters and had daughter Martha Mary Peters born 1 May 1893 in Mason county, died 10 Jun 1913 in Mason county.

Mary lastly married Charles Generaux on 10 Nov 1906 in Freesoil, Mason county.

Joseph was born Aug 1863. He was married on 14 Aug 1892 in Reed City to Sarah Fitch. Sarah was born 16 Dec 1879. They were the parents of eight children: Solomon (1893-1975); Willie (1895-?); Albert (1898-1983); Delia (1903-1916); Allie (1905-?); Harry (c1907-?); Antwine (1909-1912) and Stella (1912-1912). Sarah died 20 Dec 1912 in Brown, Manistee county.

Joseph married second to Ellen Generau on 21 Nov 1913 in Manistee. They had one child, Louis (1914-1980).
