Moses Shananaquet

Moses Henry Shananaquet was born 9 Dec 1888 in Michigan, the son of Francis Shananaquet and Mary A. Manatins. [Date from both draft records].

The Cheboygan Democrat of 31 Jan 1908 lists the names of those to be married.

On 27 Jan 1908 Moses was married to Mary Ann Keway at the Catholic Church in Middle Village, Emmet county. Mary Ann was born 21 Feb 1886 in Harbor Springs, the daughter of Simon Keway and Harriet Kosequat.

The 1908 Durant Roll field notes #43 page 32 list the head of family as Francis Shaw-waw-non-quot, age 60, Burt Lake, wife dead. The couple has three children: Rosie Bwanishing, 41, Cross Village, see 4-20; Mary Kagigebitang, 33, see 98-22; and Moses Shaw-waw-non-quot, 21, Aloha, wife Mary Ann, 22, see 27-32, no children.

Moses and Mary Ann's first child, Steven, was born 24 Mar 1909 in Emmet county.

The 1910 Federal Census has the family living in Burt Township, Cheboygan county.

Moses, 21, married 2 years, a wood sawyer in the lumber woods; Marion, 22, one child born, one child living, a basket maker at home; Stephen, son, 1 1/12; Frank, father, 63, widowed, wood chopper at home. They are full Ottawa.

Daughter Margaret was born 1 Jun 1912. [From death certificate].

Daughter Elizabeth was born in 1915. [From census, born May 1913 from death certificate.]

Daughter Anna was born 4 Aug 1916 and died 20 Nov 1916 in Friendship township, Emmet county. She is buried at Lakeview cemetery.

On 5 Jun 1917 Moses registered for the draft. He states he has a wife and four children to support.

Son Henry was born and died 27 Feb 1918 in West Traverse township, Emmet county.

Son Francis was born 9 Oct 1919 at Five Mile Creek, Emmet county. [From death certificate].

Moses' father Francis died 21 Nov 1919 in Cross Village.

By the 1920 Federal Census the family has moved to Friendship township, Emmet county. Moses is 33, a laborer at a lumber camp; Mary Ann is 35; children are: Stephen, 10; Margaret, 6; Elizabeth, 5; and Francis, 4 months.

Daughter Thelma/Louise was born 28 Aug 1922.

Son Henry was born 24 Sep 1924 in Emmet county.

Son Harry was born 26 Dec 1927, Five Mile Creek, Emmet county.

Daughter Margaret died 7 Jun 1928 in West Traverse, Emmet county. She is buried in Lakeview cemetery, section K, lot 18.

The month of February 1930 was very hard on the family. First daughter Elizabeth died on 3 Feb 1930 and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, section K, lot. 18. Then an unnamed son was born and died 16 Feb 1920 and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, section K, lot 18. 

Son Francis died 25 Feb 1930 in Friendship township, Emmet county and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, section K, lot 18.

The 1930 Federal Census has the family in Harbor Springs, Emmet county. Moses, 42, painting at boat painting; Mary B., 45; Louise, 6; Henry, 5, Harry, 2 3/12, and Steven, 21, laborer at odd jobs.

The 1938 Harbor Springs City Directory has Moses working at Melching Garage and Boat Works, living at 611 Second St.

The 1940 Federal Census has the family still at 611 Second Street. Moses is 51, laborer at boat works, Marion is 55; children are Steven, 31, laborer at boat works; Thelma, 17; Henry, 15 and Harry, 12.

The 1941 Harbor Springs has Henry J. living at 611 Second Street, and Moses H., (Mary B.), helper at Melching Garage and Boat Works, living at 611 Second Street.

Moses registered for the draft for WWII. He is working for the Works Project Administration.

Wife Marion (Mary Ann) died 22 Jun 1942 in Harbor Springs and was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, section K, lot 18.

Son Henry enlisted 20 Apr 1943.

Son Harry entered the army on 27 Mar 1946 and was discharged on 29 Apr 1947. He re-enlisted 9 Nov 1949 and was discharged on 24 Jun 1953.

Daughter Thelma died 25 Jan 1951 in Petoskey. She was buried at Lakeview Cemetery in section G, lot 26.

Son Henry was hired by the Chicago and Northwest Railroad in Chicago on 15 Dec 1958.

Moses died 9 Dec 1970 in Harbor Springs, Emmet county. The following was printed in Petoskey News Review, 11 Dec 1970. 

Harry died 4 Dec 1982 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw county.

Steven died 21 Dec 1986 and is buried in Lakeview cemetery, section G, lot 26

Barbara Odeimin

Barbara Odeimin was born 3 Aug 1877, the daughter of Michael Odeimin and Mary Ann Oke-tau-o-quet. The first record of Barbara is the 1880 federal census of Cross Village, Emmet county, Michigan. Family consists of Michael, age 45, wife Mary Ann, 35, and children Jonas, 15, Andrew, 12, Regina, 5, Benedict, 4, Barbara, 3 and Pacifica, 1.

Daughter Mary (child of Sebastian Shomin) is born 20 Apr 1894. Page #107, from the Catholic church in Cross Village, shows not only the names, births and baptisms of Barbara and her parents and siblings, but also Mary (Marie filla Barbara) on the bottom of the page.

On 9 Jul 1899 in Cross Village, Barbara married William Chingwa.

Second daughter, Anna, is born in Feb 1900.

The 1900 Federal Census of Cross Village lists Barbara Tchingwa, born Aug 1877, 22, married, 1 child born, 1 child living, occupation basket work; Mary, daughter, born Feb 1900. [At this point in time Barbara has given birth to at least two childen. It is possible that Mary is away from home in boarding school. The baby in the census would be Anna.]

Daughter Rose Mary was born 10 Mar 1904, the daughter of Jonas Leo. Jonas died 7 Nov 1904. Rose Mary was taken in by Alexander McSawby and his wife Angeline Mitchel.

Durant roll #40 page 20: Michael O-tay-e-min, dead; wife dead; child #5 is Barbara Chingway, age 33, P.O. Cross Village, separated from husband, William Chingway. Her children are Mary, age 15, P.O. Tomas [Tomah] Indian School, Wisconsin and Anna, age 8, Harbor Springs School.

Durant roll #13 page 25: Alexander Mick-saw-bay, dead; wife Angeline Willis, age 48, P.O. Charlevoix, now wife of Benjamin Willis. Children are Edward, 29, Daniel, 17 and Rosie, 4. [This is the daughter of Barbara Odeimin]

Records of Carlisle School state Mary went to Tomah from 1906 to 1909 and entered school at Carlisle on 17 Sep 1909.

Barbara's next child, Lawrence James, was born 21 Dec 1909 (son of Sebastian Shomin) He is later raised by James Skippergosh and his wife Angeline Odeimin. [This is not the same Angeline who was Barbara's sister and married Peter Walker.]

The 1910 Federal Census of Charlevoix township, Charlevoix finds Barbara and son Lawrence living with her sister's family. 

Peter Walker, 43, head, married twice, married 5 years, speaks English, laborer on the docks; wife Angeline, 30, married once, 3 children born, 3 children living, speaks English; Mary, 4, Lucie, 2, Benjmine, 1/12 (all listed as daughters); Barbara Damon, sister-in-law, 32, divorced, x children born, x children living, speaks English; Lawrence Shomin, nephew, 4/12. 


The next family is Angeline Mcsawba, along with adopted daughter Rose Mcsawba, age 6, the child of Barbara Odeimin.

The 1910 Federal Census for Little Traverse township, Emmet county, lists Anna Odeimin, age 10, as a student at Holy Childhood School.

The 1910 Federal Census for Cumberland county, Pennsylvania lists Mary Shomin, age 15, as a student at Carlisle School.

The following article, on file at the Traverse Area District Library in Traverse City, Michigan was written by Bernice Pulcipher Dean. She explains that these were people she knew as a child in Yuba, Michigan and describes Lawrence being adopted.

Son Clarence Joseph, (child of Sebastian Shomin) was born in 1912.

Sebastian Shomin, father of three of Barbara's children, died 30 Apr 1914 and is buried in Cross Village.

On 10 Oct 1915 in Cross Village, Mary Shomin, 21, daughter of Sebastian Shomin and Barbara Odeimin married Moses Paul Kogechiman [Kagechiwan], 23 son of John Kogechiman and Lucy Chingwa. Moses was married once before. 

Clarence died 2 Dec 1915 in Emmet county. Barbara is listed as informant on his death certificate.

Son Francis Carroll, (son of Paul Carroll), was born 9 Jan 1917.

Barbara has not been found in the 1920 census.

The 1920 Federal Census of Acme, Grand Traverse county, has Angeline Skippergosh, 60, widowed, basket maker at home, son Lawrence, 10 and Peter Shenonquot, 88, lodger.

On 13 Aug 1920 in Emmet county, Barbara married George High. Each state they were married once before.

Rose McSauba, 17, married Leo J. Tookolo, 23 on 1 Sep 1920, in Charlevoix.

Daughter Sarah High was born 27 Jan 1921 in Manistique, Schoolcraft county.

George High died 13 Jun 1921 in Manistique, Schoolcraft county, leaving Barbara a widow.

Son John High (child of Joseph High) was born 23 Sep 1923 in Manistique, Schoolcraft county.

The 1930 Federal Census of Charlevoix lists Leo Tookolo, 30, married at 23, born Mississippi, Chocktaw, wife Rose, 27, married at 16, born Michigan, Ottawa. Children are Kathryn R., 6, Lillian D., 5, Martina C., 2 10/12, and Dorothy A., 5/12.

Sarah High, age 9, died 3 Sep 1930 in Manistique, Schoolcraft county.

Francis Carroll was married 1 Jul 1939 in Petoskey to Myrtle Lasley.

By 1940 Barbara and son John are back in Charlevoix, living with daughter Rose. Household consists of Rose Tookolo, 36, married; her daughters Lillian, 15, Martina, 13 and Dorothy, 11; Barbara High, lodger, 63, widowed, and John High, lodger's son, 16. All are listed as living in the same house in 1935.

Lawrence Skippergosh was married 3 Jul 1946 in Charlevoix to Frances Loonsfoot.

Barbara died 4 May 1954. Her obituary appeared in the Charlevoix Courier on 6 May 1954, naming four surviving children - Rose, Lawrence, Francis and John.

Barbara is buried at St. Mary's cemetery in Charlevoix.

Mary Elizabeth Jeanette Foster was the daughter of William Foster and Elizabeth Poisson/Fisher. William was born 9 Mar 1846 at Hudson Bay, Manitoba, Canada and died 13 Dec 1930 at Sugar Island, Chippewa, Michigan. Elizabeth was born 28 Apr 1855 at Sault Ste Marie, Chippewa, Michigan and died 22 Mar 1908 at Payment, Sugar Island, Chippewa, Michigan.

Jeanette was married to Louis Rickley and they had five daughters, Florence, Louise, Charlotte, Lucile and Margaret.

Louis Rickley was born 31 Aug 1858 in Algoma, Ontario, Canada, the son of Antine Recollet (born 1813 Green Island, Canada, died 11 Aug 1912 in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan) and Charlotte Poudrier Lemay (born 1827 in Penetanguishene, Canada). 

The 1900 Federal Census has not been located for Louis and Jeanette.

On 29 Dec 1901 daughters Charlotte, Ethel, Florence and Lucy arrived at the Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School for a period of three years. Their father is listed as Louis Rickley, living. The girls are listed as full Native in one year and 1/2 in the next. Also arriving at the school on the same day are Emma and Rose Rickley, daughters of Frank. The girls are cousins through their mothers. It is unknown if and/or how their fathers were related.

The National Archives at Chicago has records for Lucile and Maggie Rickey, daughters of Louis and Jennie.

Margaret's first child, Lavinia, was the daughter of Benedict Sagataw (son of George Sigwate/Sagataw and Christine Osawwawnemeke).

     Lavinia was b. 17 Nov 1916 at Sault Ste Marie. She married Levi Feathers (son of Joseph Feathers and Eliza). Levi died 13 Mar 1937 in Marquette county. Lavinia died 26 Dec 1982 in Petoskey.

Margaret next married Amos Feathers (son of Louis Feathers and Sarah Lambert) and they were the parents of two children:

1) Ralph Louis was born 11 Nov 1925 St. Jaques, Delta, Michigan. He died 15 Oct 1998.

2) Ione Lorraine was born 12 Jan 1928, Ogontz, Delta, Michigan. She died 11 Apr 1994 in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan.

Amos died 24 Apr 1931 in Manistique, Schoolcraft county.

Margaret married third to Joseph Moses Beaver (son of Moses Beaver and Elizabeth Wheaton) 6 Jan 1943 in Nahma, Delta, Michigan

Margaret was then married to Simon Wabanimkee, 12 May 1956 in Charlevoix.

Margaret died 28 Aug 1973 in Charlevoix and is buried at Brookside Cemetery.
