James Judson




James Judson was born about 1844, father not yet identified, mother said to be named Minerva. His first wife was Ah-zho-ne-quah/Orh-ah-qua.

Daughter Julia was baptised on 9 Mar 1874 at Riverton Methodist Indian Church, listed as daughter of James, residing in Eden township. 

Son Ed was born 16 Dec 1878 in Eden, Mason, Michigan, son of James and Arshelic


Son Edward died 9 Feb 1880 in Eden at age 2, daughter Martha died 30 Mar 1880 in Eden at age 4.

Maple sugar - 50 pounds; molasses - 80 gallons; potatoes - 1 acres, 35 bushels; apples - 1 acre, 24 bushels; forest product - 20 cords wood valued at $35.



James' second wife was Alice. She was born about 1849, the daughter of Nabenaykezhick.

Daughter Julia was born 9 Mar 1886 in Eden, Mason, Michigan.


In 1890 James and wife Kah-go-yah, residing in Custer, Mason county was listed as #825 on appendix E, Phineas Pam-to-pee & 1,371 Potawatomi.

Daughter Julia was sent to the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School under the name of Julia Newton (step-father's name)

1906-07 Newton, Julia; Ottawa, parent Alice Newton of Freesoil, age 18, admitted 23 Aug 1906 for 3 years.

James died 22 Mar 1912 in Manistee. Cause of death was accidental drowning. Buried at Oak Grove.



Alice died 19 Oct 1925 in Freesoil. Obit mentions her son John Newton and grandsons. Her husband and two daughters preceded her in death.
