Peter Jackson / Wah be guaw nay

Wah-be-gwaw-nay (later known as Peter Jackson) was said to be born in 1830 in Michigan, the son of Key-way-cush-cum. Waw-be-gwaw-nay was probably born closer to 1840 based on his first appearance as an adult on the annuity rolls and not receiving land in 1855.

"Ke way cush cum was the chief of a small band of Ottawas located on the Manistee River in 1836. The population at that time was 33 individuals. This band moved to the Grand Traverse area at some date after the 1836 treaty. By 1855 the population of this band had increased to 119 people. Ke way cush cum was still listed as chief of this band in 1872. The majority of this band selected allotments in Leelanau County, Leland Township (T30NR12W) in the southwestern portion of the township." [From Larry Wykoff ]

Ke way cush cum, Chief, selected the N1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section 28, T30N, R12W, consisting of 80 acres.

Waw-be-gwaw-nay was not listed alone on the 1858 annuity roll.  Chief Key-way-cush-cum was listed as having 3 men, 1 woman and 5 children. [Two grown sons?]
