William Smith / Waw-be-skaw-waw-quo-um

William Smith / Waw-be-skaw-waw-quo-um was born about 1845, the son of Peter Waw-be-skaw-waw-quo-um.

The earliest record found for the family is the 1855 annuity roll.

1855 land allotment - Peter Waw be skaw naw quo um - lot 2, section 29, T34N R7W, 69.55 acres - under chief Addison Aw ko we say (Agosa)

Chief Agosa and members of his band moved from Old Mission to Omena in Leelanau county. Peter however took his land in what is now Hayes township, Charlevoix county.

The records of the Old Mission/Grove Hill church show Wahbiskahnahqum had a child named Sarah being baptized 19 Oct 1865. Rev. Dougherty noted that Wahbiskahnahqum was a member of  Rev. George Smith's church in Northport, Leelanau county.

Son Paul, was said to be born 10 Jul 1877. Birth record on gives only year.



Father Peter sold lot 2, section 29, T34N R7W (Hayes township) to George Ells on 23 Apr 1878 for $300.

Son John was born about 1878. Although John's birth was given as 15 Jun 1881 on his death record, he was born prior to the 1880 census.

1881 Property Tax - Hayes township, Charlevoix

Peter Wabuskansquom - lot 1, section 33, T34N R7W, 30.1 acres, valued at $270. state, 49 cents, county $1.86, township $1.32, highway 80 cents, school $1.38, dog $1, total $6.85 paid Feb 17. Personal property valued at $40, state 8 cents, county 13 cents, township 19 cents, school 21 cents, total 61 cents paid Fe 17.

On 17 Dec 1881 Peter Wahbeshahnequam and Sarah, his wife, sold 1 acre of land in section 33 to Charles Senyro of Kent County for the sum of $10.



Charlevoix Deeds liber 8, page 634 states Peter Wabasquanoquom and Sarah sold to William Wagasquanoquom for $120 lot 1 section 33 T34N R7W, except for 3 acres sold to Horace Newson. William's purchase was 27 10/100 acres. Liber 8, page 635 records the sale to Horace Newson for $20.



Son James was born 27 Dec 1883.



23 Feb 1886 William Wa ba squaw na quoum and Marion, his wife sold to A. Flena Kane, lot 1, section 33 T34N R7W (excepting the 3 acres previously sold to Horace Newson) for the sum of $50. Recorded in liber 14 page 24 Charlevoix county deeds.



19 Aug 1886 William purchased the S1/2 of the NW1/4 of the SE1/4 of section 35, T34N R7W from John Pa she gishick and Susan, his wife, for the sum of $150. Recorded in liber 16, page 13, Charlevoix county deeds.





William died between 1886 and 1894.

Widow Mary was said to be married in 1893/4 to Joseph Jackson. Record has not yet been found.

On 14 Aug 1896 son Paul arrived at Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Son Paul, 23, was married on 3 May 1902 to Julia Peters, 16. William Petoskey, minister of the gospel performed the ceremony.


Son James died 30 Nov 1904, His age is given as 17 years 18 months 14 days, occupation as mail carrier, parents as Joseph Jackson and Mary Smith.



Son John, 26, was married on 6 Nov 1905 in Burgess, to Mary Harrington, 19, daughter of Adam Harrington and Susan McMillan. Horace S. Newson, Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony.

In 1911 son Paul updated the Carlisle Indian Industrial School on his life.





Mary Ann wife of William Smith and Joseph Jackson, died 8 Sep 1916 in Hayes township.




Son John died 22 Jan 1930. His birth is given as 15 Jun 1881, parents as William Smith born Charlevoix county and Marion born Northport. He was married, buried at Greenwood cemetery in Petoskey.
