Isaac Mashka (Mishkeahsega) was said to be born around 1852 in Michigan, the son of John/Bangman Mashka and Wah-own-qua.

Siblings included Kahkuhgewa/Kawgawgeway (James) born c1832; John, born c1841; Tobendone/Taybaindawn (Peter), born c1844 and Saha wah nak way (female), born c1846.

Michelle K. Cassidy, in her dissertation "Both the  Honor  and the  Profit":  Anishinaabe  Warriors, Soldiers, and Veterans  from  Pontiac’s War  through the  Civil  War," states that the pension file of soldier John Mashkaw contains information from Louis Genereau that Chief Mashkaw's name was Bangman Mashkah. Cassidy further states that the 1854 Methodist records list John, Peter, J.A., Jacob and Isaac Bangham all in a row.

"This was another band whose location in 1836 was at the rapids of the Grand River. This band was associated with the Baptist Mission established there in 1826 by Isaac McCoy and superintended by Leonard Slater. In 1836 the chief of this band was Noah qua ge shik or Noonday. Shortly after the 1836 treaty, this band left the rapids and Leonard Slater purchased lands in Barry County for a new mission called Ottawa Colony. Slater sold individual lots to members of this band. In 1838 the population of this band was 121 individuals. Noonday remained the chief of this band until his death in 1847 when Maish caw took over as chief." "Dorty" mentioned in 1930 US Census was better known as Dorothy Mashka, who grew up to marry Richard Harp. When she was still in primary grades, she would read letters to the Peshawbestown elders from their kids in boarding schools, and translate the English the children wrote into spoken Odawa. Being very young, Dorothy had trouble translating some of the concepts expressed by the boarding school students. Quotes from Dorothy can be found in the file under her family's name at the Chicago branch of the US National Archives.

  2. Lots of valuable info here, Vicki! The mention of The Genoa School is interesting. Was that in Nebraska? If they went there, and if it was not residential, who did they live with?
