First Catholic Church in Cross Village.
In June 1833, Father Baraga baptized 15 people at Old Arbre Croche. [From Old Arbre Croche by Mary Belle Shurtleff]
Michael was baptized in 1834 (from Holy Cross Church records.) [While the church had other names prior to becoming Holy Cross in 1895, the records are referred to as the Holy Cross Church records throughout this post.]
O-da-e-min was probably born between 1800 and 1810 [based on age 20 to start a family and 12 years to have 6 children.] On the 1839 annuity roll his household is listed as one man, one woman and six children, received $70.72 under Chief Naw wosh coota
The Indian Dormitory on Mackinac Island was designed by Henry Schoolcraft and competed in 1838. It's purpose was to house people coming to the island to receive annual annuities, but those who came preferred to camp on the nearby beach. By 1867 it became a public school. Today it is an art gallery.
After the 1836 treaty Naw we maish co tay purchased land near their village site. He later sold this land to the members of the band. Four of O-da-e-min's children purchased land in Cross Village. Each paid $3 to Joseph Naw we mash kotco for a lot. The deeds were first recorded in Mackinac County (liber E, pages 6, 7, 19, 20, 76-81) and later copied to Emmet county. Curious is the fact that if the birth dates are correct the siblings are not yet of legal age to be buying land.
