William Shocko 1849-1928

Kahbenahe (William Shocko) was said to be born 10 Oct 1849 in Michigan, the fourth known child of Jacko Penaisewanquot and Mary Ann. He joined siblings Louis, John, and Simon.

Sisters Susan and Catherine were born about 1850 and 1852

Brother Andrew was born about 1854.

Father Jacko enlisted in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters on 1 Jun 1863 at Northport for 3 years. His age is given as 40 years old. Mustered 22 Jun 1863 at Detroit Arsenal, Dearborn, Wayne, Michigan. He was captured on 17 Jul 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia. After initial confinement, he and the others who were captured were sent by cattle rail car to Camp Sumter in Andersonville, Georgia.

On 1 Nov 1864 Jacko died at the Andersonville Prison hospital. He was buried at the Andersonville National Cemetery, stone #11705. The stone gives his name as S. Recalt.

After their father's death brothers John and Natahwinodin (Louis) enlisted in Company K.

On 11 Dec 1873 (recorded 1 Oct 1874) William and his brothers John and Simon sold 20 acres described as the N1/2 or the SE1/4 of the NW1/4 of section 21 in Township 29 North, Range 11 West, for the sum of $10.


William married Jenny Gogobbezoquay on 17 Mar 1876 in Bingham Towship, Leelanau, Michigan.


Daughter Elizabeth was born about 1876

William married Julia Shawnongay on 8 Jul 1879 at Immaculate Conception Church in Peshawbestown.

On 5 Jun 1918 son Joseph registered for the draft in Leland. He gave his birth as 16 Sep 1896 in Peshawbestown, father's birthplace as Old Mission, employer at William Shocko, nearest relative as Rose Ellen Shocko. Josehp was described as tall, medium build with black eyes and hair.




On 14 Oct 1918 in Peshawbestown, Joseph married Rose Allen. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Dorotheus Philipp, Pastor at Peshawbestown. Witnesses were Andrew and Mrs. Andrew Pedwedon of Peshawbestown



Joseph enlisted in the army on 22 Oct 1918. On 23 Oct 1918 he was sent to Camp Eustis, Virginia. He was a private in company c of the 59th battery, 15th anti-aircraft sector.

William died 27 Apr 1928 in Suttons Bay township, Leelanau, Michigan. His age was given as 78 years, 6 months, 18 days (born 10 Oct 1849). Cause was a cerebral hemorrhage.
