Benjamin Silas / O-gaw-bay-o-say

O-gaw-bay-o-say or Benjamin Silas was said to be born in 1843, the son of Chief Job Penaysewawbe.

He joined brothers Jeramiah, (who later was called Jeramiah  S. Nelson), born about 1836 and John, born about 1840.

Benjamin married Sarah Thomas on 13 Aug 1864 in Arenac, Bay, Michigan. Both are listed as of Arenac. Ceremony was performed by A.B. Beach, Justice of the Peace.



Sarah was said to be born in 1840, sister of Julia, died in 1866, and Elizabeth, age 25 in 1868. {From Gruett Roll.]

Father Pe-nay-se-waw-be remarried to Pe-any-se-we-ge-zhe-go-quay. Their son Jacob was born about 1856.

Daughter Ke-zhe-gaw-so-way-quay/Lucy was born 2 Jul 1865. [From death certificate]

Son Elijah was said to be born in 1866 [age 14 on 1880 census, yet not mentioned on the Gruett Roll in 1868.]

Daughter Lucy was said to be born in 1868 [age 21 when married, 1880 census says age 17 which would put her birth in 1863. This Lucy is not on the Gruett Roll which puts her actual birth as after 1868 and more likely after her sister Lucy's death in 1872.

Son John was born 15 Feb 1871 [From death certificate]

Father Job. Pe nay se waw be (deceased) and his heirs received the patent on the S1/2 of the NE 14 of section 29 of T15N R4W, signed 27 May 1871.




Daughter Lucy died 17 Sep 1872 in Pinconning, Bay, Michigan. Cause of death was fever and ague. Her age was given as 7 years, 2 month, 15 days. Parents given as Ben and Sarah.




Son John died 30 Dec 1875 in Pinconning, Bay, Michigan. His age was given as 4 years 10 months 15 days. Cause of death was infection of the lungs. Parents given as Benjamin and Elizabeth.



Son John Benjamin (Che-bak-kee-shig) was born 4 Jan 1878 in Pinconning, Bay, Michigan



Son Wesley was said to be born 5 Oct 1879 from age on his death certificate, but he was not born prior to the 1880 census.

Daughter Amelia was born 30 Nov 1887 [from her tombstone].

On 14 Oct 1889, daughter Lucy, age 21, married Francis Roy, age 23. W.H. Allman, Minister, performed the ceremony in Pinconning. [Francis' name was actually Rodd.]


After her marriage daughter Lucy moved to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada

Son Wesley did 22 Sep 1897 in Pinconning, Bay, Michigan. His age was given as 17 years, 11 months, 17 days, putting his birth as 5 Oct 1879, but he was not born before the 1880 census. Cause of death was consumption, occupation was farmer.



Benjamin died 29 Sep 1898 in Pinconning. His age was given as 60, cause of death was consumption. Father's name was given as Panaseewabee.

On 8 Jun 1907, son John, age 26, married Stella Squanda, age 23. His occupation was brakeman, son of Ben Silas and Sarah Greensky. Her occupation was teacher, daughter of William. Ceremony was performed by G.W. Hawl, minister.


On 1 Jul 1908 Lillian, daughter of John and Stella died. Her age was given as 2 months, 19 days, putting her birth at 12 Apr 1908.



On 25 Feb 1909, daughter Amelia, age 21, married William Ashmun in Pinconning. Arthur E. Gray, minister, performed the ceremony. Witnesses were John and Stella Silas

On 20 Nov 1918, Harry Raymond, son of John and Stella died of pneumonia. His birth was given as 12 Jul 1917.

Vina, wife of son Amos, died 6 Aug 1921 following a miscarriage. Her age was given as 23 years, 2 month, 6 days; her parents as Chas. Stevens and Polly Metcalf.


On 12 Nov 1923 in Pinconning,  son Amos, 37, section foreman, married Winifred L. Jones, 27. It was her first marriage, his second. Ceremony was performed by Simon Greensky, minister.




Sarah died  25 Nov 1927 in Bay City. Her age was changed from 100 to 95, birth year from 1822 to 1827 to 1832. Amos was informant. [She was listed as 72 on the census only 7 years earlier.]

Amelia Ashmun died 18 Apr 1945 in Howell, Livingston, Michigan.

John B. died 24 Dec 1948. He was survived by his widow, daughters Hazel, Frances and Evelyn, brother Amos and sister Miss Lucy Rodd of Sarnia, Ontario.



Lucy died May 1959 in Sarnia, Ontario. Her obit was printed in the Windsor Star, 5 May 1959.



Amos died 2 May 1964. He is buried in Pinconning township cemetery.

  1. Jeremiah Silas Nelson is my great great grandfather. Never able to find his death certificate. He lived in Bay City and Bangor. This post is illuminating. Supposedly he had to take name Nelson per the state.
