Me-se-naw-sko-day-way / Alfred Sands

 Me-se-naw-sko-day-way, later known as Alfred Sands, was said to be born before 1835. His father was Ge che na gon/Ke che nay gow. 

At the time of the 1836 treaty Agosa's band was a part of Aish quay go nay be's band, but separated in 1839. 


Rev. Peter Dougherty came to the area now known as Old Mission, Grand Traverse, Michigan in 1838. He built a mission church and school there. 

Since the land at Old Mission was not for sale, Dougherty advised the people to save the money from the 1852 annuity payment and buy land in Leelanau county.

On 1 Nov 1852 Ge che na gon purchased land - SW1/4 of the SE1/4 of section 26, T31N R11W consisting of 40 acres.




Alfred was an adult by 1855 when he was listed on the land allotment roll, #856, picking SE1/4 of the SW1/4, section 25, T31N, R11W, 40 acres. [This is not the same land description he received patent on in 1872]

Father John Ke che nay gow was listed on the land allotment roll, #864, picking S1/2 of NE1/4 of section 32, T31N R11W, 40 acres.

The population of Agosa's band in 1855 was 161. 

On Apr 1856, Alfred Mezhenushkedawa, was baptized by Rev. Dougherty. It was noted that he was in school.

Prior to 1858 Alfred married Charlotte.

On 5 Jan 1862, Mezhenushkedawa had his son, George Henry, baptized by Rev Dougherty in Omena.

Alfred - 20 acres improved, 20 acres wood land, valued at $500, implements and machinery valued at $40; 2 horses and 3 swine, valued at $200; produced 27 bushels wheat, 30 bushels corn and 20 bushels oats.


13 May 1871 (filed 7 Nov 1874) Ge che na gaw and wife deeded to Alfred Sands for $1, the SW1/4 of the SE1/4 of section 26 T31N R11W. This is the land originally purchased in 1852.

Sands, Alfred, section given as 23 instead of 26, valued at $100; personal valued at $60. 
Real estate taxes - state 13 cents, county 80 cents, township 40 cents, highway tax 75 cents, school $1.00 cents, - total $3.08; personal taxes - state 8 cents, county 48 cents, township 24 cents, school 60 cents - total $1.40





On 26 Jun 1872 Alfred Me se naw sho day way received patent to the N1/2 of the NE1/4 of section 27, T31N, R11W, consisting of 80 acres




Also on 26 Jun 1872 John Ke che nay gow received patent to the S1/2 of the NE1/4 of section 32, T31N, R11W, consisting of 80 acres.

Alfred died 3 Aug 1901. His age was given as 68. He was widowed, 3 children born, 1 child living. Cause of death was carginoma of stomach. Father was given as Che Nayaw. He was buried in Omena (Hill Crest) cemetery
