Francis Gilbert

Francis Gilbert was most likely born around 1819 in Michigan. He married Elizabeth Bajidadinokwe/Kay e cha us kwe.

 


He belonged to the Village of the Cross band, located at Cross Village. In 1836 Naw we maish co tay was chief, and the band population was 305. Chief Naw we mmaish co tay started buying land for his band as early as 1846.

From Harbor Light June 18-24-1986 page 2 - Francis purchased a lot in the village of Cross Village in Nov/Dec 1850, for $3.

At the time of the 1855 treaty the population of Naw we maish co tay's band was 254 people. Francis took as his land allotment the E1/2 NW1/4 of section 20 in T37N R6W, 80 acres.

6 May 1856 Francis Gilbert and wife Ba-ge-da-di-no-kwe purchased from John B. Weicamp for $1, fractional section 27 54/100 acres and NW1/4 of NW1/4 section 35 40 acres in T38N R6W.


Land records 10 Jun 1856 - Francis bought the SW1/4 of the NW1/4 of section 35 and fractional section 27 T38N R6W, 50 and 52/100 acres; and SE1/4 of the SE1/4 of section 33, T38N R6W, 50 acres.

On 5 Jun 1871 Francis received the patent on his land allotment



Property taxes - 1876. Francis owned lot 1 block 12 in Cross Village, section 34, T38N R6W valued at $200; SE1/4 of the SE1/4, section33, in T38N R6W, 40 acres valued at $300; SW1/4 of the NE1/4 of section 20, T37N R6W, 40 acres valued at $50; E1/2 of the SE1/4 of section 20, T37N R6W 80 acres valued at $100; and $100 personal. He paid state, county, township, school, poor and 2 mill taxes for a total of $9.75




On the 17 Dec 1879, two quit claim deeds were filed. On 22 Jun 1877 Francis had paid $1 to Odaquanoquay for the SW1/4 of NE1/4, section 20, T37N, R6W, consisting of 40 acres and on 
23 Dec 1878 Francis paid $1 to Louis Ogitanawquad, Antoine Etawigijwebe and Mary Ann Animaquaw for the SW1/4 of NE1/4, section 20, T37N, R6W consisting of 40 acres. Both sales describe the same piece of land.
