Simon Peters 1858-1932

Simon Peters/Pesney was said to be born 20 Mar 1858 in Michigan, the son of Peter Tay-qwaw-gaw-nay and Mary. [Information about Peter is here. Information on Mary's parents is here.]

Simon's brother Michael Takwagane of Bear River, age 18, married Mary Osamigokwe of Burt, age 18 on 15 Aug 1866 in Emmet county. Ceremony was performed by Seraphin Zorn, Roman Catholic Priest at Little Traverse. Witnesses were Michael Wegijigomi and Elizabeth Giwekando, both of Bear River.

Simon's father, Peter, died between 1876 and 1880. No death record has been found.

Note that Simon's grandfather David aged 29 years in the 10 years between census. David aged an additional 26 years by 1881 if the notice in the Emmet County Independent on 27 Sep 1881 is him. [No death record was found in Antrim county.]


On 30 Oct 1882 in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan, Simon Peter Pesney married Angelina Deverney, maiden name given as Monebasdom. Simon was age 22, born in Petoskey, occupation farmer, while Angelina was age 24, born in Petoskey. [Information on Angelina and her parents is here.]


Angeline had previously married John Henry Devernay on 10 Apr 1874 in Bear Creek, Emmet, Michigan. Her last name was given as Manehotam, age 16, born in Bear Creek. John was 26, born in Grand Haven, occupation sailor.


No children were born to this first marriage and no divorce record has been found yet. [The 1908 Durant field notes call them separated even though each has remarried.]

Simon and Angeline's first known child, Julia, was born 24 Mar 1888 in Haynes, Charlevoix, Michigan


Daughter Margaret was said to be born 7 Sep 1893. [Date from death certificate.]

On 18 Feb 1897 in Petoskey, Menonoquet, female, widow, age 110, died of old age in Petoskey. She is possibly Simon's grandmother Jane.





An unnamed daughter was stillborn on 4 May 1899 in Bay Shore, Hayes, Charlevoix, Michigan. Parents names given as Simon Peters and Angeline Gibson. Baby was buried in Petoskey.

It appears Mitchell answered the census taker's questions as Mary is his wife, Alice is his daughter and Madeline his granddaughter.



Daughter Julia, age 16, with father's consent, married Paul Smith, 23, a laborer, son of William, on 6 May 1902 in Petoskey. Ceremony was performed by William Petoskey, Minister of the Gospel. Witnesses were Moses Pamisaah and Mary Peter.


Daughter Margaret attended Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial, Mount Pleasant, Michigan, from 28 Aug 1902 to 20 Jun 1904




Mother, Mary Pesney died 24 Feb 1905 in Petoskey. Her age is given as over 90, born in Old Mission, daughter of David Menonagna. Several children were born, 2 are living. Cause of death injured by ---- ---- over chest and thigh. Code 166.5 is atrophy/debility. Informant was Simon Pensney. Burial at Greenwood cemetery in Petoskey.

Son Nathaniel died 3 Mar 1905 in Hayes, Charlevoix, Michigan at the age of 8 months.. Parents names given as Simon Peters and Angeline Gibson. Nathaniel was buried in Greenwood cemetery in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan. Cause of death - spasms. The code "71" means rickets, the lack of vitamin D, calcium or phosphate, which has muscle spasms as a symptom.


Daughter Margaret attended public school from 2 Sep 1905 to 2 Jun 1907. [From Carlisle Indian Industrial School records.]

Daughter Margret, age 16, married with parents consent to Andrew Wasaquam, 23, on 18 Jun 1907 in Charlevoix. He was the son of Peter Wasaquam and Mary Naquam. Her parents names were given as Simon Peters and Angeline. Ceremony was performed by W. H. Collina, Justice of the Peace, with Paul and Julia Smith as witnesses.

Margaret attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She arrived at the school on 29 Aug 1908 and departed 8 Feb 1908, cause of departure - sick. [Since she can't leave before she arrived, departure should by 1909, and she wasn't "sick", she was pregnant.]





Her progress card says she was in room 4 when she arrived and room 4 1/2 at departure in January 1909.



 Margaret's physical record of December 1908. States father living and in good health, mother living but has cough, one sister living in good health, 9 brothers and sisters deceased causes and years unknown.

Grandson Amos, son of Margaret Peters, was born 17 May 1909. [Date from death certificate].

On 3 Feb 1910 grandson Amos, son of Margaret Peters and unknown, died at Hayes, Charlevoix, Michigan. Cause of death was epileptic fits, code #69 meaning epilepsy. He was buried in Petoskey.

Daughter Margaret was married to John Kewagoshkum on 27 Jan 1917 in Bay Shore, Charlevoix, Michigan. Her age was given as 23, parents as Simon Peters and Angeline, married once before. John was 21, son of Jim Kewagoshkum and Alice, occupation was laborer. Ceremony was performed by Wm. Petoskey, Minister of the Gospel. Witnesses were Paul and Julia Smith of Bay Shore.



Daughter Margaret died 8 Feb 1919 in Hayes, Charlevoix, Michigan. Parents names given as Simon Peters and Angeline Gibson. Cause of death was empyema (code 93- a collection of pus in thepleural cavity, associated with pneumonia). She was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan.

Sister-in-law Mary, wife of Mitchell, died 27 Dec 1926 in Petoskey at the age of 83. Cause of death listed as old age.



Wife Angeline died 6 Nov 1927 in Hayes, Charlevoix, Michigan. Her first name was spelled Evangeline, age given as 67, born 1859, father's name given as Thad Moonbotom. She was buried in Greenwood.

1930 Federal Census - Hayes township, Charlevoix county

Peter, Simon, owns home, real estate valued at $800, 63, widowed, laborer on general farm. [Living next door to daughter Julia and her family.]


Simon died 12 Sep 1932 in Petoskey.
